In Our House – by Neville Gardner

Earlier in the service I read out a story called “Where’s God?” written by Victor Kelleher. I refer to it a bit in this talk, so here’s a summary:

A boy called Peter wanted to know where God is. His sister and dad weren’t much help, but mum said God was in everything. Peter looked in a church, where he discovered that God is in lots of places at the same time, but he couldn’t see him. An old man in the park told Peter that God is in his heart, but Peter didn’t know how to look there. By the end of the story, Peter still hadn’t found God, but he would be searching again soon.

The church we are sitting in was opened on the 1st of February 1965; that’s very nearly 60 years ago. There were other buildings before that – what we now use as the church hall was the previous church. Some of you were here for the opening and have been coming ever since. Others of you have been coming for varying lengths of time – many of you weren’t even born 60 years ago! Whatever your age or background, you all share reasons for being here.

I realise there are some people who are unable to be here for various reasons, though they would like to be – they are still part of this congregation.

In the story I read earlier, the boy Peter went into a church looking for God. I guess that’s one reason some people go to church, but there are lots of others, as we’ll see. Later, Peter was told that God is in everyone’s heart.

Let’s use Peter’s style of logic. If God is in everyone’s heart, then everyone who goes to church takes God in with them. Therefore, a good place to meet someone who has found where God is, is in a church full of people.

But if they’ve already found God, why are they in church?

With the start of a new year, and with this building’s milestone, I thought we could remind ourselves of some answers to this question.

When you visit someone else’s house, you can normally work out what each room is used for by the things that are in them. The kitchen contains things connected with cooking; the laundry contains things connected with washing clothes, and so on.

Some rooms contain things that as a visitor you might want to ask questions about. Visitors to our house are often interested in the displays of minerals and historic artefacts in the lounge. Or the books everywhere – Nicky and I have rather different responses to questions about them!

These types of things reveal more about your hosts than an armchair or toaster do. All the extra stuff is evidence of accumulated personal history and memories; it can give you a sense of the unique character of the occupants.

Over its 60 years, this church building, like a house, has acquired a collection of, mostly, useful and meaningful items. These say something about the character of its users. Like a house, you can get an idea of this character by looking at the contents.

Today we’ll look at some of the physical contents of this auditorium and use them to answer that question I arrived at earlier – why do we come to church?

Sometimes when you visit a house, you only get to see one or two rooms. But you know there are other rooms with other functions. In the same way, I’m going to concentrate on this auditorium – there are other spaces where the functions of the church go on, not just in the buildings around us but wherever you are out in the world.

So, let’s examine some of the contents of this room.

You might expect me to start with the cross at the front, but my first item is actually the rows of seats. These represent you, the community of Christians who worship in this church on a Sunday morning. I wouldn’t be able to talk about some of the other items in the auditorium without mentioning the people who call this church home.

Now for the crosses. Even many non-Christians know that a cross is a symbol of the execution of Jesus. Some churches have a representation of Jesus on the cross as a reminder of his suffering and sacrifice. Others, including Baptist churches, use an empty cross, emphasising the fact that Jesus was taken down, buried and then rose from the dead.

It’s less common to see three crosses together in a church.

Jesus was crucified with a criminal on either side. One of them wanted Jesus to save him so he could escape judgement. The other was willing to accept judgement, because he knew he had done wrong, but he allowed Jesus to take up the burden of his sin. The cross on one side therefore represents the rebellion of humankind. The cross on the other side represents the repentance we all need. The central cross represents the redemption that Jesus offers.

  • We don’t worship the cross, but we do worship the risen Christ it represents. That’s one of the reasons we come to church.

I’ve chosen the Bible next; it’s quite obvious here at the front. Some churches have an open Bible on display to acknowledge it as God’s Word, to show it is treasured and to indicate that it is accessible to everybody. There are copies in the pews for people to use during a service.

The Bible is a source of authority. It records how God has revealed himself to humans, and how he expects them to respond. We tend to use it as a sort of guidebook to navigate our lives. It can be quite hard to understand, and that’s where this lectern comes in. This is where someone stands to read parts of the Bible out to people, and where they place their notes if they are preaching.

I said just now that the Bible is accessible to everyone; we can read it for ourselves, so why do we need sermons? Sometimes we need help to discern some of the things God says, and we can benefit from a different way of seeing things, presented by people God has given the task and gifts to. That way, we may learn to see things clearer for ourselves. Sermons can stir up our emotions and excite us about God. Also, by being with others as God’s word is explained, we can be affected and supported by the reactions of those around us.

There are lots of inspirational sermons available online to watch at home or on the move. However, I feel that we benefit by hearing our own ministers bring messages created, under God’s guidance, especially for this congregation.

  • Learning from the Bible is one of the reasons we come to church.

We can see plenty of evidence of music in this church. There’s the organ, the piano, other musical instruments and, at times during a service, singers and musicians. Over the years, music has played a large part in developing the character of this church community.

In his letter to the Ephesians, the words of Paul still urge us to be “speaking to one another with the words of psalms, hymns, and sacred songs; sing hymns and psalms to the Lord with praise in your hearts.” (Ephesians 5:19).”

Psalm 33 tells us to “Give thanks to the Lord with harps, sing to him with stringed instruments. Sing a new song to him, play the harp with skill, and shout for joy!”

This collective singing, and the making of music, is not for entertainment; it’s to speak to God, to worship him and to rejoice in him. As I can attest, you don’t have to have a good voice – God hears your best attempt and takes it as praise.

When you sing collectively, you also sing to each other, joining together in worship. You sing to yourself too, soaking up and refreshing yourself with the words.

Many years ago, I used to live in Cardiff, Wales, just across the river from Cardiff Arms Park rugby ground. When the national team was playing, I’d open my window and listen to thousands of Welsh people singing together, all supporting the same side. That’s what we do in here, sing together because we’re all on the same side.

  • Singing and playing to the Lord is one of the reasons we come to church.

The next thing I’ve chosen to look at is less obvious. It’s the very stylised fish symbol above the windows. I talked about the cross earlier, but it wasn’t a commonly used symbol in the early Christian church. Until Christianity became an accepted religion, Christians were persecuted, even crucified for their beliefs. So the cross was a symbol of fear for many. Instead, the image of a fish was often used, like a sort of password, to mark secret meeting places and to identify Christians to each other.

Why a fish? Many reasons have been suggested. The simplest say it was because Jesus used fish in several of his miracles (think bread and fish, filling empty nets with fish). He also called some of his earliest disciples, actual fishermen, to become ‘fishers of men.’

We don’t need a secret password anymore, but the fish is still a potent symbol. It reminds us of the hardships of early Christians, but mostly it reminds us that we too are to be ‘fishers of men’. And in church we can learn some of the attitudes, the biblical knowledge and tools necessary.

  • Being encouraged to be ‘fishers of men’ is one of the reasons we come to church.

I’m going to stop my little tour of this room in our house here. There are other reasons for coming to church that don’t have an obvious object associated with them, such as prayer. Items connected with other reasons are only present sometimes – communion and baptism for instance. I encourage you to think about how these fit into your own church-based life, or how you would explain them if you were taking a visitor on a tour of the auditorium.

I’ve mentioned some reasons for coming to church that can be summed up as ‘spiritual growth’ – we can develop our spiritual life and grow closer to God through worship, Bible-based teaching, singing, prayer. Mind you, you can do these things on your own too.

Scripture doesn’t tell us that we must attend church, but it does speak about the blessing of being part of a church community. For example, in the Letter to the Hebrews we read:

Let us be concerned for one another, to help one another to show love and to do good. Let us not give up the habit of meeting together, as some are doing. Instead, let us encourage one another all the more, since you see that the Day of the Lord is coming nearer.

Hebrews 10: 24-25

As well as worship and spiritual growth, there are reasons for gathering together which can’t always be met elsewhere.

We can meet and build friendships with people who share our beliefs and values. This helps give us a sense of belonging.

It helps us receive comfort and support when life becomes difficult.

If you have children, you are supported in giving them a Christian upbringing.

I’m sure you will think of other reasons.

So, we have lots of reasons for coming together for worship and fellowship on a Sunday, and we have accumulated a number of physical items to help us. It’s hard to imagine gathering on a Sunday without a cross, a Bible, sources of music and somewhere to sit. Some would argue that you can have all these things without having a dedicated building that is only used one morning a week. After all, such a building is expensive to build and maintain, and resources could be better used helping our wider community, our neighbours.

Different churches have found different ways to address this balance. All have advantages and disadvantages.

Here at Tawa Baptist we are blessed, because earlier congregations (including some current members) have given us facilities that include both a dedicated worship auditorium and rooms and buildings for other uses. It’s much like a house of many rooms.

And I think Peter would have found God in all of them, don’t you?

Scripture: 1st Peter 2:9-10

Introduction:

Good morning everyone.

In Maori culture, when someone is introducing themselves, formally to a group, they often give their pepeha. A pepeha tells the story of the people and places you are connected to. It is like weaving, except with words and history.

In giving your pepeha you say where you come from – your maunga (which is your mountain, the place you hold to), your awa (which is your river) and your marae (which is the place where you belong). You also create connections with people by talking about your iwi (which is your tribe), your whanau (or family) including your kaumatua (who are your grandparents), and your matua (or parents). The last thing you tell people is your name.

By introducing yourself in this way you reveal something of your collective identity. Not only do you show people what is important to you but you also create connections with your listeners. Maybe you both share a place or a person in common.

The point is, we are who we are in relationship with others. Identity is not just an individual or personal thing. Identity is a collective thing. As human beings we are connected to a particular people, a particular history and a particular place.  Most importantly our identity is found in God, our creator. The Lord defines us.

Today we continue our series in first Peter. Last week we heard how we are connected to Christ and each other as living stones in God’s temple. This week, in verses 9-10 of chapter 2, Peter gives further attention to our collective identity as God’s special people. It’s like Peter is reminding his readers of those aspects of their pepeha which they share in common.  

From 1st Peter, chapter 2, verses 9-10, we read…

But you are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, God’s special possession, that you may declare the praises of him who called you out of darkness into his wonderful light. 10 Once you were not a people, but now you are the people of God; once you had not received mercy, but now you have received mercy.

May the Spirit of Jesus illuminate God’s word for us.

Peter’s readers got a hard time for believing in Jesus. They were not treated well by the society they lived in because they followed Christ. One of the things we need if we are suffering for our beliefs is a strong sense of identity. Peter’s readers were being treated like dirt and needed to be reassured that they were not dirt. To the contrary, collectively they (and we) are God’s special people.

S.P.E.C.I.A.L.

To draw out what Peter is saying here, I have come up with an acrostic which spells the word S.P.E.C.I.A.L.

S is for sacred, P is for priests, E is for elected, C is for called, I stands for included, A is for access and L is for loved.

The church is sacred to God.

The church is a kingdom of God’s priests.

The church is elected by God.

The church is called to declare God’s praise.   

The church is included by God.

The church has access to God.

And the church is loved by God.

Some of you may collect stamps. One of the characteristics that makes a stamp valuable is its age. Usually the older and rarer the stamp the greater its price. Also, the condition of the stamp. If a stamp has been cared for so it is not faded or torn, still whole and not attached to anything, it will usually be worth more.

Ironically those stamps with an error or mistake on them are sought after. So, if something went wrong in the printing of a stamp, then the stamp with the mistake will fetch more than the same kind of stamp from a normal issue.

The valuing of stamps is counter cultural in a way. Generally speaking, our society values what is young and new and fast and perfect. But stamp collectors go against the flow. Stamps represent what is slow – snail mail as they say. Stamp collectors value what is old and imperfect but still cared for.

It seems to me most people who collect stamps are not in it for financial gain. They are conservationists at heart. Most stamp collectors feel a certain connection with history through postage. Their stamp collections are a sacred thing – a special possession.  

If you cannot relate with stamps as a taonga (a treasure), then perhaps you have a watch or a ring or a wedding dress or family photos or your grandfather’s war medals passed down to you, which you hold sacred, as a special possession.

In verse 9 Peter tells his readers they are a holy nation. Holy, as we know, means set apart for a special purpose. Another word for holyis sacred. The Christian church is a sacred nation. The church (collectively) is set apart for God as his special possession. The church belongs to God in a unique way.

That phrase holy nation comes from Exodus chapter 19. In Exodus 19 the people of Israel are in the wilderness after having left their slavery in Egypt. God is about to make a covenant with the people – he is about to give them the 10 commandments – and the Lord instructs Moses to tell the Israelites, they are a holy nation, a royal priesthood, his special possession.    

In saying these things God is ascribing value & identity to the nation of Israel. He is remembering his history, his connection, with Abraham, Isaac & Jacob. Israel is like a book of rare, old, imperfect but still cared for stamps in God’s collection. In the same way, the Christian church is like Israel, sacred to God.

And, like Israel, the church, collectively as a whole, is a royal priesthood. Or more literally, a kingdom of God’s priests to all peoples of the world.

A priest is a person who serves God and has access to him. In the Old Testament priests gained access to God through the blood of a sacrificial animal. We do not need to do that anymore because, in sacrificing himself on the cross, Jesus has atoned for the sin of humanity once and for all. Through Jesus’ blood we have access to God the Father.

William Barclay observes how the Latin word for priest is Pontifix which means bridge builder.[1] A bridge provides access. A priest is supposed to provide a bridge between God and humankind. Or said another way, a priest is like a mediator or intermediary between God and people. A priest is a go between.

Sign language is one of the official languages of New Zealand. Whenever there is a Covid announcement on TV we usually see a sign language interpreter beside Jacinda or Ashley, facilitating communication with the deaf community; translating the officials’ words for those who cannot otherwise hear.

Those sign language interpreters are like priests or intermediaries. They serve the government and the deaf community. They have special access to the Prime Minister, which the rest of us do not have, and they use their access to get the message out.

The church is like a team of sign language interpreters. We are a community of priests. As priests we have special access to God (we have a back stage pass) through faith in Jesus. We are to use our access to intercede with God for the world.

In other words, our job is to show and tell the world about God’s love in Christ. But the communication goes both ways. As well as showing the world God’s love, we are to tell God about the world’s needs. We are to bring the world before God in prayer. We call this intercessory prayer.

I always like to include an intercessory prayer in our services of worship because, collectively, we Christians are God’s priests and interceding for people is our job. Obviously intercessory prayers are not limited to Sunday worship services. We can intercede for people in the world at any time. 

Last Wednesday Daryl and I had just hopped in the car to go to a pastors’ meeting together. As we did we noticed some yelling from across the street. A woman was yelling at a man. There was no physical violence but strong words were exchanged.

We were already running late for the meeting but, in that moment, what was happening on the church’s doorstep seemed more important. The first thing we did was pray for God’s peace in the situation. Then we walked across the road to see if we could help. As it turned out our help was not needed. This woman was able to help herself.

Now I’m not suggesting we should always intervene in a situation like that. Sometimes it is wiser to stay out of it. But we can always pray. As God’s royal priests we have special access to God, through Jesus. We are God’s servants, his translators, his intermediaries, in this world. Martin Luther called this the priesthood of all believers.

You may have noticed I am mixing up the letters of my special acrostic. We, the church collectively, are sacred (or holy) to God. We are priests of God, with direct access to him, so we have a duty to intercede for the world.

Verse 9 of 1st Peter chapter 2 also tells us we (the church) are a chosen people. When God chooses people, we call that election. The kingdom of God is not a democracy, where everyone gets to vote. The kingdom of God is a theocracy, where God gets all the votes. Having said that, God votes in a just and compassionate way. In a way that serves the well-being of all, both collectively and individually.  

God elected or chose to bless Abraham and make him a blessing to the nations. Just like God elected or chose Israel to be his people (his special possession). Likewise, God elected or chose the church to be a holy nation, a royal priesthood. The ‘E’ in special stands for election – God’s vote, His choice.

In some ways it goes the against the grain of Kiwi culture to think of ourselves as specially chosen or elected. But we need to value ourselves properly if we are to declare God’s praises and relate with others in a right way. Without a strong sense of identity and connection, we will end up compromising who we are. We will lose our saltiness.

If you feel uncomfortable with being set apart as special, then it may help to remember God’s election is by grace. In other words, God does not necessarily chose people based on how good they are or how likely they are to succeed. If anything God is more inclined to elect those who no one else would choose. So being special does not make us better than others.

In any case, the specialness is not attached to us as individuals. The specialness is attached to Jesus specifically and to the church collectively.

When Peter says, ‘you are a chosen people’, or an elect people, he is making a connection with Israel’s past, when they were exiles in Babylon. There are two great journeys of redemption in Israel’s history. The first was the exodus, when God led the people out of slavery in Egypt. And the second was when God brought the Jewish exiles out of Babylon, back to Jerusalem.

In Isaiah 43:20 we read about God bringing the exiles home: See, I am doing a new thing… I am making a way in the desert and streams in the wasteland… to give drink to my chosen people. [My elect people.]

The way in the desert is the way out of exile – the way home from Babylon to Jerusalem. When Jesus said, I am the way, that’s partly what he meant. Jesus is the way out of exile.

You will remember that Peter is addressing his First Century Christian readers as exiles and sojourners. As Christians, Israel’s heritage is woven into our pepeha too. Our journey through the wasteland of this world may seem long and hard but it is not dry. God has provided streams in the desert for us – he has given us his Holy Spirit.

The church is sacred to God. The church is a kingdom of God’s priests with access to God, through Christ. The church is elected by God and the church is called to declare God’s praise. The ‘C’ in God’s special people stands for called

Returning to 1st Peter, chapter 2. In the second part of verse 9 Peter describes the purpose of the church. Collectively, we are to declare the praises of God who has called us out of darkness into his wonderful light.  

Once again this connects with Isaiah 43, where God calls his people out of the darkness of exile that they may proclaim His praise.

The image of being called out of darkness and into God’s wonderful light is a metaphor for conversion. When the designers of the Billy Graham Center in the USA, sought to provide an architectural parable of conversion, they planned a passageway through darkness into a room walled with brilliant light. [2] 

Last Friday’s weather was a real transformation from darkness to light. All grey and wet and windy in the morning, then blue sky, sunshine and calm in the afternoon.  

God’s calling of us implies conversion. What we notice about this image of conversion is that it is from one state of being to another. It is from darkness to light. When God called Israel out of Egypt, the nation went from a state of slavery to a state of being free to serve God. Likewise, when God called his people out of exile in Babylon, the people went from having the status of immigrants to being citizens, free to worship God.

Conversion is a bit like being transferred from one Covid level to a better, less restricted, level. When we move from level 2 to level 1 (hopefully this week), we will have a greater freedom to worship and praise God together.

Of course, being called to declare God’s praises is not limited to singing songs heavenward in church on a Sunday. Telling others about the good things God has done for us is another way of declaring his praise. Likewise, we may cause others to declare God’s praise when we live and act in a way that helps and blesses others.

There are two more letters in our special acrostic – I and L. The church is included by God and loved by God. In verse 10 of chapter 2, Peter writes: 

Once you were not a people, but now you are the people of God; once you had not received mercy, but now you have received mercy.

Peter is quoting from the book of Hosea here. Hosea was an Old Testament prophet who had the unenviable task of telling the people of Israel they had been unfaithful to God and so judgement was coming.

As a sign of Israel’s unfaithfulness, God called Hosea to marry an unfaithful woman. So Hosea married Gomer. When Gomer gave birth to a daughter, God instructed Hosea to name the child, Lo-Ruhamah, which means, not loved (or not shown mercy). And when Gomer gave birth to a son, God told Hosea to name the boy Lo-Ammi, which means, not my people. The names of Hosea’s children were a parable of what was happening in Israel’s relationship with the Lord.

But God’s judgement is followed by a message of hope. Speaking about a time after the exile, God says through Hosea: I will plant her for myself in the land; I will show my love to the one I called ‘Not my loved one.’ I will say to those called ‘Not my people’, ‘You are my people’; and they will say, ‘You are my God.’ [3]

As Edmund Clowney puts it: “If Israel, through sin, had become no people… then the grace that can restore Israel… can equally bring Gentiles into the intimacy of fellowship with God.” [4]

Peter’s words (in verse 10) about God’s inclusion and merciful love also connect with Isaiah 19:23-25. Historically Assyria and Egypt had oppressed Israel – they were Israel’s enemies. But Isaiah foresees a time when the people of Assyria and Egypt will be included by God, so they worship the Lord alongside the people of Israel.   

From Isaiah 19:23 we read: In that day there will be a highwayfrom Egypt to Assyria.The Assyrians will go to Egypt and the Egyptians to Assyria. The Egyptians and Assyrians will worship together. 24 In that dayIsrael will be the third, along with Egypt and Assyria, a blessing on the earth. 25 The Lord Almighty will blessthem, saying, “Blessed be Egypt my people, Assyria my handiwork, and Israel my inheritance.”

Some of Peter’s readers were Jewish and some were Gentile. Either way, through Jesus, they were now included by God and loved by him – as Isaiah had predicted.

Conclusion:

The Maori language has a beautiful poetry to it. Take the word maunga for example (maunga means mountain). The first syllable of the word maunga is mau (m a u). Mau means hold. So, a mountain is a place you hold to – it is like an anchor or a reliable point of reference. The word, maunga, is poetic – it is a symbol of stability and security.

Many of Peter’s readers needed stability – they needed something secure to hold to. Because of their faith in Christ they had lost a lot of the things one might ordinarily hold to or find security in. Some had been cut off from their biological families, others would have lost their land and business contacts. Certainly, the Roman empire looked at Christians with suspicion. To Roman society Christianity seemed like a relatively new religion.

By creating all these connections with Israel’s heritage of faith, Peter was giving his readers something secure to hold to. The roots of Christianity go a long way back. Through faith, Jesus is their maunga (their mountain) and he is a mountain for us to hold to as well.

The church (collectively) is special to God. We are sacred to God. We are priests of God, elected by God, called by God to declare his praise. We are included by God, with special access to him. And, we are loved by God. This is woven into our pepeha of faith. Our identity and belonging are in Christ.

Give your pepeha (in Maori or English) to those in your group or write it on a piece of paper if you are on your own. How do you feel talking/writing about the places and people who are important to you?  

Listen to someone else’s pepeha. Did this create any connections with your own story?

Do you have a special possession? Why is this special to you? In what sense is the church God’s special possession?

What is a priest? What do priests do? How might we carry out our responsibility as God’s priests in this world?

Discuss / reflect on the image of moving from darkness to light, as a metaphor for conversion? What does it mean to declare God’s praises? How might we do this?

In what sense is Jesus our maunga (a mountain to hold to)?

Why do you think Peter takes the time to remind his readers of how special they are to God?

The Big Reveal

Introduction:

Walk on to stage with a blindfold on: I can’t see. Can anyone help me?

  • Wait for someone to tell me to take the blindfold off
  • That’s better – now all is revealed

The goodness of God, the providence of God, the grace of God, the beauty of God, the thoughtfulness of God, the wisdom of God, the kindness of God, the plan & purpose of God is all around us

  • But we don’t always see it because we haven’t removed our blindfold

 

This morning we continue our series in Ephesians by focusing on chapter 3, verses 1-13

  • In chapter 2 Paul had been talking about our salvation in Christ, both our personal salvation and the salvation of the group
  • Now, in chapter 3, Paul is about to pray for the Ephesians when he gets side tracked for a few moments talking about the work God has given him to do – this is essentially the work of revealing God’s eternal plan
  • Paul’s job is to help remove the blindfold by preaching Jesus
  • From Ephesians 3, verse 1, we read…

For this reason I, Paul, the prisoner of Christ Jesus for the sake of you Gentiles — Surely you have heard about the administration of God’s grace that was given to me for you, that is, the mystery made known to me by revelation, as I have already written briefly. In reading this, then, you will be able to understand my insight into the mystery of Christ, which was not made known to people in other generations as it has now been revealed by the Spirit to God’s holy apostles and prophets. This mystery is that through the gospel the Gentiles are heirs together with Israel, members together of one body, and sharers together in the promise in Christ Jesus. I became a servant of this gospel by the gift of God’s grace given me through the working of his power. Although I am less than the least of all the Lord’s people, this grace was given me: to preach to the Gentiles the boundless riches of Christ, and to make plain to everyone the administration of this mystery, which for ages past was kept hidden in God, who created all things. His intent was that now, through the church, the manifold wisdom of God should be made known to the rulers and authorities in the heavenly realms, according to his eternal purpose that he accomplished in Christ Jesus our Lord. In him and through faith in him we may approach God with freedom and confidence. I ask you, therefore, not to be discouraged because of my sufferings for you, which are your glory.

May the Spirit of Jesus illuminate this Scripture

Following Paul’s train of thought can a little difficult at times – like a braided river Paul’s stream of consciousness is complex and intertwined

  • We need to step back to try and see the bigger picture – where is this braided river heading?
  • Well, Paul is essentially talking about the revelation of God’s eternal plan
  • In Ephesians 3 Paul describes the revelation of God’s plan like this…

By his Spirit, God reveals the mystery of his plan to Paul and the other apostles

  • Paul (and the other apostles) then reveal God’s plan of salvation to humanity by preaching the gospel of Jesus Christ
  • As a result of their preaching people find peace with God and with each other – communities of like-minded believers become the church
  • And, through the church, God reveals his wisdom to the unseen (non-human) spiritual beings
  • So that’s the big picture of this passage – now let’s look at the different braids of Paul’s thought
  • First let’s consider the mystery of God’s plan revealed to Paul

God reveals his plan:

Hold up a USB stick. I have here, in my hand, a USB stick

  • No one here (but me) knows what secrets are held in this device
  • And none of you, just by looking at it, can know – not without plugging it in to a computer – but even then you might not understand it

In verses 2-5 of Ephesians 3 Paul talks about the mystery of God’s plan revealed to him

  • In this context a ‘mystery’ is a truth known only by divine revelation
  • In some ways the Old Testament Scriptures were sort of like a USB stick – they contained a secret, the mystery of God’s plan, but no one knew how to properly access the Scriptures to reveal the contents
  • Jesus and the Holy Spirit unlock the USB of the Scriptures to reveal God’s plan
  • Paul, and the other apostles of the first century, got to see the contents because God showed them – he opened their minds with insight to understand
  • Therefore, the writings of the New Testament achieve the status of holy Scripture because they are a record of God’s revelation to human beings

When we were kids we would go to birthday parties and almost always we would play a game of pass the parcel

  • Sitting in a circle we would pass the present around and each time the music stopped the person holding the present would remove a layer of paper. Pass the parcel was exciting because it was full of mystery
  • No one knew when the music would stop or how many layers of paper there were or what present was waiting inside
  • The mystery of God’s plan is a bit like the present hidden inside layers of paper in a pass the parcel game
  • Each generation removed a layer and got a bit closer to revealing the mystery inside but it was Paul’s generation who were at the right time and place in history to open the final layer

So what is God’s mystery plan then? Well, it was a gift no one expected. Paul spells it out in verse 6…

This mystery is that through the gospel the Gentiles are heirs together with Israel, members together of one body, and sharers together in the promise in Christ Jesus.

Notice here the repetition of the word ‘together’

  • Paul is talking about God’s creation of the church in this verse

Those of us who have grown up in NZ probably don’t realise how incredible and audacious God’s plan is because most of us haven’t been close to the kind of Jewish / Gentile hostility that Paul was in touch with

  • But we do have some idea. Throughout our lifetime we have watched news reports of the ongoing conflict between Israel and the Palestinians and Israel’s other Gentile neighbours
  • God’s mystery plan is to bring the Jews & Gentiles together, in peace, and make us one in Christ
  • And it’s the church’s purpose to model that togetherness – it is the church which embodies the hope of that peace
  • But God’s plan goes beyond mere reconciliation – God’s plan is to give believing Jews & Gentiles equal status in Christ
  • While the Old Testament does talk about the Gentiles turning to the God of Israel no one thought we would be included on an equal footing with the Jews, as members of God’s family – no one foresaw the Christian church hidden in the USB of the Hebrew Bible

 

Paul preaches Christ:

Having received the revelation of God’s plan, Paul then shares it with others by preaching Christ to people – he realises he can’t keep it to himself

  • If you are a scientist and you discover a cure for cancer you don’t keep it to yourself – you share it with the world
  • Evangelism, sharing the good news, is just one beggar telling another beggar where to find bread

In verses 8-9 Paul says…

  • Although I am less than the least of all the Lord’s people, this grace was given me: to preach to the Gentiles the boundless riches of Christ, and to make plain to everyone the administration of this mystery…

Paul hasn’t forgotten how he used to persecute the followers of Christ and so he refers to himself as less than the least of all the Lord’s people

Paul describes the preaching task he has been given as a ‘grace’ – that is, a gift, a privilege, something beautiful that God has given him

  • As well as being a privilege preaching is also hard work and it can get you in trouble
  • Preaching that it was God’s plan to include the Gentiles on an equal footing with the Jews got Paul arrested and jailed
  • He was under house arrest when writing this because of the message he preached, but his eyes weren’t on his chains
  • His eyes were on the privilege of being the one who got to unwrap the final layer of God’s parcel of truth to share with others

The content of Paul’s preaching is the boundless riches of Christ

  • Paul has already touched on the nature of these riches in the first two chapters of Ephesians – let me refresh your memory…
  • Christ’s riches include: resurrection from death,
  • Enthronement with Jesus in the heavenly realms,
  • Reconciliation with God and peace with other believers
  • Citizenship in the Kingdom of God
  • Adoption into God’s family
  • And intimacy with God – becoming a part of God’s new temple, where his Spirit dwells

In verse 12 of Ephesians 3 Paul describes another one of the riches of Christ

  • In Christ and through faith in him we may approach God with freedom and confidence.
  • This connects with what Paul had been saying at the end of chapter 2 when he talked about us being part of God’s family and indeed his temple
  • This access of all Christian people to God through Christ is what the sixteenth century reformers termed ‘the priesthood of all believers’ [1]
  • In Old Testament times, only the descendants of Aaron could serve as priests in the temple but through faith in Christ we too can draw near to God as his priests

So it’s not like Daryl & I are the only priests here, you also are priests

  • The role of a priest is to help people in their relationship with God
  • When you intercede in prayer for others you are acting as a priest
  • When you listen with compassion to someone at work and encourage them to find the right path you are acting as a priest
  • When you say a blessing over your children at home and proclaim the goodness of God to them you are acting as a priest
  • When you sacrifice your time and your money for the sake of God’s church and God’s purpose in the world you are acting as a priest

Paul’s message to everyone also includes the administration of this mystery

  • In verse 2 Paul talks about the administration of God’s grace
  • Two ways of referring to the same thing – God’s plan of salvation
  • Paul’s use of the word administration is quite refreshing
  • Normally we associate administration with tedious paper work but Paul associates it with the mystery of God’s grace
  • Medicine might be administered in the form of a pill or by an injection
  • And the payment of money might be administered by cash or eftpos
  • But the mystery of God’s grace is administered by faith in Christ and by preaching

When I was reflecting on this passage over the past week or so I was reminded of Joseph, the son of Jacob, who was an administrator of God’s grace

  • Sold into slavery in Egypt, Joseph proved to be a good manager and, through the revelation and insight God gave him to interpret Pharaoh’s dreams, Joseph rose to the position of Prime Minister where he administered God’s grace in the form of food security

We, like Paul and Joseph, can also administer God’s grace at least to the extent that we have received it

  • What grace or gift has God given you as one of his priests?
  • Is it the grace to be present and listen – who would God have you come alongside?
  • Is it the grace to speak words of encouragement into the lives of others – what would God have you say?
  • Is it the grace of being in a position to help people with your influence or your resources – who would God have you empower?
  • Is it the grace to remove someone’s blindfold so they can see God’s goodness in the world around us – who can you help to see the good news?
  • There are many other gifts of course but the question is: What grace has God given you to share as one of his priests?

God revealed his plan to Paul and Paul didn’t keep it to himself – he preached Christ to all kinds of people because Christ is the key to God’s plan, Christ opens God’s USB

 

The church reveals God’s wisdom:

But there is another level of revelation going on that we can’t see and might not even be aware of: The church reveals God’s wisdom, not to humankind necessarily but to non-human spiritual beings in the heavenly realms

A tapestry has two sides – a top side and an underside

  • The underside of the tapestry usually looks like a mess – you can barely tell from the underside what’s going on up top
  • The physical / material world in which we live is like the underside of the tapestry, while the spiritual world is like the top
  • From our perspective (in the upside down, from underneath) we can’t see things as they really are in the spiritual realm

In verse 10 of Ephesians 3 Paul writes…

  • His intent was that now, through the church, the manifold wisdom of God should be made known to the rulers & authorities in the heavenly realms,

God’s wisdom is manifold – it is multi-faceted, with many different threads forming a coherent and beautiful picture

  • The rulers and authorities in the heavenly realms is most likely a reference to spiritual (non-human) creatures like angels and demons
  • The main idea here is that God reveals his wisdom to these spiritual beings through the church on earth
  • From our perspective below, the church doesn’t always seem beautiful or gracious or perfectly ordered – it often looks and feels a bit messy
  • But when angels & demons look at the church they see the topside of the tapestry and they are in awe of what God has done through Christ

We might wonder why God would do this – using a church comprised of imperfect human beings to reveal his wisdom to the spiritual realm

  • I don’t think it is just to make himself look good
  • More likely God does it to redeem his non-human creation
  • It is, after all, God’s plan and purpose to reconcile all things to himself through Christ – ‘all things’ includes the creatures of the spiritual realm

Now, if you think about it, this places a very high value and meaning on church

  • The church isn’t just about us – it’s also about a whole dimension of reality that we can’t see
  • When we gather for worship each Sunday our audience is greater than we might imagine

 

Conclusion:

This morning we’ve heard how God, by his Spirit, reveals the mystery of his plan to Paul and the other apostles

  • Paul (and the other apostles) then reveal God’s plan of salvation to humanity by preaching the gospel of Jesus Christ
  • As a result of their preaching people find peace with God and with each other – communities of like-minded believers become the church
  • And, through the church, God reveals his wisdom to the unseen (non-human) spiritual beings

This morning’s reading finishes with Paul saying…

  • I ask you, therefore, not to be discouraged because of my sufferings for you, which are your glory.
  • The reason Paul was in prison was that he believed Gentiles now have the same access to God that Jews have
  • Paul’s suffering tells us that he really loved the Gentiles and believed in God’s plan for them
  • ‘Glory’ is a weighty word, it refers to something substantial and meaningful, something lasting
  • Paul’s suffering for the Gentiles gives real weight and substance to his message and it gives glory to his Gentile readers also
  • Paul’s suffering says people like us matter to God
  • You might not feel that glorious – you might not think your life is that significant but Paul’s suffering for us says otherwise
  • You are glorious, your life is significant, you do matter to God
  • We matter to God

    • How do you feel knowing that Paul (and others) have paid a high price so that you/we can be included in God’s family?
