Introduction:

Good morning everyone.

If you watch Country Calendar then you will have heard of riparian planting. Riparian planting is the practice of planting trees and shrubs alongside the edge of rivers, streams and lakes.

There are many advantages to riparian planting. The tree roots give stability to the soil, preventing erosion, and the plants act as filters keeping the water clean by inhibiting effluent and fertiliser run off.

Trees along the water’s edge also provide shade, maintaining cooler more stable water temperatures. This prevents the growth of excess algae and weed as well as protecting marine life. Many fish in New Zealand cannot survive when the water temperature is above 25 degrees.

Riparian planting has a lot of benefits for the environment. And, as God designed it, these benefits do not come at the expense of the tree. Shrubs planted near water ways tend to thrive because they have a reliable source of moisture and nutrients. Life is connection.

Today we begin a new sermon series which I’m calling, The Testimony of Trees. The Bible has a lot to say about trees and what they have to teach us. We start our series this morning by thinking about two passages of Scripture which use riparian planting as a metaphor for a life well lived. Psalm 1 and Jeremiah 17.

Psalm 1 and Jeremiah 17 are similar in a number of ways. We are not sure which passage was written first, but we will start with Psalm 1 because that is the more familiar reading…

Psalm 1 

1 Happy are those who do not follow the advice of the wicked, or take the path that sinners tread, or sit in the seat of mockers, but their delight is in the law of the Lord, and on his law they meditate day and night. That person is like a tree planted by streams of water, which yields its fruit in season and whose leaf does not wither—whatever they do prospers. Not so the wicked! They are like chaff that the wind blows away. Therefore the wicked will not stand in the judgment, nor sinners in the assembly of the righteous. For the Lord watches over the way of the righteous, but the way of the wicked leads to destruction.

May the Spirit of Jesus illuminate God’s word for us.

Robert Frost wrote a poem called The Road Not Taken. The famous last verse goes like this…

I shall be telling this with a sigh

Somewhere ages and ages hence:

Two roads diverged in a wood, and I –

I took the one less travelled by,

And that has made all the difference.     

Perhaps one of the things Robert Frost is saying here is that life is full of choices. We are not governed by fate. We get to make a difference in our own lives by the path we choose.

Not everything that happens in life is down to the choices we make of course, but our choices can and do have a significant influence on the outcome. Which means that human life is not a joke. Human life is charged with responsibility, fused with purpose and invigorated by hope.   

Psalm 1 sets before us two contrasting ways of living, each with very different outcomes. The way of the righteous and the way of the wicked. The way of the righteous leads to fruitfulness and abundant life, while the way of the wicked leads to emptiness and destruction.

Psalm 1 begins with the word ‘Happy’ or ‘Blessed’. Think about that for a moment. The whole collection of 150 psalms begins with happiness. Apparently, God wants us to be happy. The Lord wants us to find abundant life.

But the road to happiness is not the path of least resistance. Verse 1 is a statement of what not to do if you want to be happy.  

Happy are those who do not follow the advice of the wicked, or take the path that sinners tread, or sit in the seat of mockers,

As Derek Kidner notes, following advice has to do with thinking. Taking a path has to do with behaving and sitting in a seat has to do with belonging. Thinking, behaving and belonging, this is how a person chooses their allegiance.

Maybe there is a kind of progression with these three things. It all starts with the mind, what we think about. What we think about tends to inform our behaviour. If we think about doing good, then we are more inclined to do it. And if we think about doing bad then we are more inclined to do that.

The path we take represents our routine way of doing things. Our daily habits. Do we make room in each day for prayer. Is our conversation filled with words of truth and grace. Do we deal with people fairly and kindly.  

Of course, how we behave invariably determines who we end up sitting with. That is, who we belong with. For example, if we choose to steal, we will end up hanging out with thieves. But if we choose to work and worship honestly, we will end up in the company of honest God loving people. 

In the Bible a ‘scoffer’ or a ‘mocker’ is one of the worst kinds of sinners because they are the furthest from repentance. [1] A ‘mocker’ is so far down the wide and easy road that they not only can’t see anything wrong in what they are doing, they also ridicule others who are living right and doing it hard on the narrow road.

Having said what the happy do not do (in verse 1), verse 2 then goes on to describe how happy, righteous people do behave…  

…but their delight is in the law of the Lord, and on his law they meditate day and night.2   

Meditating has to do with what we think about, what we chew over in our minds. So the secret to happiness is not thinking all day and all night about what I can do to satisfy my every desire. The secret to happiness is found by thinking about what God wants.  

As Jesus says in Matthew 7: ‘In everything do to others as you would have them do to you; for this is the law and the prophets.’

Delighting in the law of the Lord is not about feverishly following a list of rules and regulations. It’s about realising the freedom we have to love God and love our neighbour as we love ourselves.

We delight in the law of the Lord (his Word) because through it God shapes our thinking, heals our hearts and reforms our behaviour so that we are set free to do what is right and stand with God’s people.

So, who then is righteous and who is wicked? I mean, most people appear to be a bit of a mixture.

Well, it’s like Jesus said in Matthew 7: ‘You will know them by their fruits. Are grapes gathered from thorns, or figs from thistles? In the same way, every good tree bears good fruit, but the bad tree bears bad fruit…’

Perhaps Jesus is saying here, you can’t really judge a person by first impressions. You have to look at the fruit of a person’s life. You have to look at what outcomes their actions produce. Do their actions reveal God’s good character and bless others, or not?

Verse 3 of Psalm 1 goes on to describe the outcome (or the fruit) of those happy ones who meditate on God’s law…

That person is like a tree planted by streams of water, which yields its fruit in season and whose leaf does not wither—whatever they do prospers.

Here we have the image of riparian planting. A well-established tree, planted by a waterway, doing good for the environment it is in.  

Fruit of course is not enjoyed by the tree itself; it is enjoyed by others. The fruit is anything that blesses others – anything that is good for others. What’s more the fruit arrives in its season – that is, in a timely way.

The fruit could be an act of justice, a gift of mercy, a helping hand, some wise listening or a kind word, just when it is needed.  

The reference to the leaf not withering is a poetic way of saying that the tree is not adversely affected by drought. It is not that the tree never experiences difficult circumstances, it does. The point is the tree (or the righteous person) is able to withstand the dry and difficult times because they are nourished at their roots by the water of God’s Word and Spirit.

When it says, whatever they do prospers, it doesn’t necessarily mean that good people get rich and stay healthy. It means the good work they do prospers. God sees to it that the lives of the righteous have meaning and are not wasted, even if they do happen to suffer in some way.

If the righteous are like fruitful trees planted by a stream, then the wicked are like chaff that the wind blows away. You couldn’t get a greater contrast.

Chaff (in the Bible) is the ultimate example of what is rootless, weightless and useless. Chaff is the complete opposite of a fruitful tree. Fruit has seeds, it perpetuates itself. But chaff doesn’t. Chaff is dead, it comes to nothing.  

At the final judgement, the wicked won’t have a leg to stand on. In the end, they are separated from the righteous in much the same way that chaff is separated from grain.

Psalm 1 concludes with a kind of summary statement in verse 6…6

For the Lord watches over the way of the righteous, but the way of the wicked leads to destruction.

Psalm 1 is saying, when you boil it all down there are basically two ways you can live your life, each with a very different outcome. You can choose happiness or emptiness. You can live as if God’s instructions matter, or you can live as if they don’t. You can be a riparian planting of the Lord, or you can be chaff.

Jeremiah 17

Jeremiah 17 gives virtually the same message as Psalm 1. From Jeremiah 17, verses 5-10 we read…

This is what the Lord says: “Cursed is the one who trusts in man, who draws strength from mere flesh and whose heart turns away from the Lord. That person will be like a bush in the wastelands; they will not see prosperity when it comes. They will dwell in the parched places of the desert, in a salt land where no one lives. “But blessed is the one who trusts in the Lord, whose confidence is in him. They will be like a tree planted by the water that sends out its roots by the stream. It does not fear when heat comes; its leaves are always green. It has no worries in a year of drought and never fails to bear fruit.” The heart is deceitful above all things and beyond cure. Who can understand it? 10 “I the Lord search the heart and examine the mind, to reward each person according to their conduct, according to what their deeds deserve.”

Fashions change. These days tanned skin is considered attractive but prior to the 20th century white skin was the desired look. To achieve this white complexion, wealthy people would apply a pale lead-based makeup to their face.

Lead is toxic of course and the makeup had a detrimental effect on people’s health. Some even died from lead poisoning while others did damage to their skin, which they only made worse by applying more lead makeup.  

Not that we are much better today. Over exposure to the sun in pursuit of the perfect tan puts you at risk of skin cancer.

Similar to Psalm 1, Jeremiah 17 contrasts two very different types of people. Those who put their trust in God and those who don’t. Jeremiah thinks of righteousness in terms of trust in the Lord.

Those who turn away from the Lord in their heart are likened to a bush in the wastelands. They will dwell in the parched places of the desert, in a salt land where no one lives. In other words, they will end up thirsty, fruitless and isolated.

In the eyes of the world the bush may appear to be doing well. But just because someone appears successful and attractive at first doesn’t mean they will flourish and be fruitful in the end. Sometimes people cover over a sad reality with a lead-based makeup, more concerned with how things look than how things really are.

In contrast, those who trust in the Lord are like a riparian planting. They will be like a tree planted by the water that sends out its roots by the stream.

They are not anxious or afraid of hard times. Nor do they need to pretend to be something they are not. They flourish and remain fruitful, whatever the climate, because they depend on the Lord.

It is worth noting that the tree of verse 8 is the person as heaven sees them.[2] The values of heaven are different from the values of this world. The person of verse 8 may not always appear successful from a worldly point of view. And they might not always feel like they are flourishing. But ultimately, the person of verse 8 is like the proverbial tortoise who wins the race in the end. Only heaven sees us as we really are.

When Jesus gave the beatitudes in Matthew 5, he was describing those who are truly flourishing from the perspective of heaven. For example, blessed are the poor in spirit, blessed are those who mourn, blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness and so on.  

In the eyes of the world, the poor, the meek and those who grieve do not look like they are doing well, nor do they feel great. But from heaven’s perspective they are the lucky ones because they are depending on God. They rely on the Word and Spirit of the Lord from the roots of their being.   

The key to a tree’s fruitfulness and resilience is its roots. The roots are the unseen foundation. The roots are what connects the tree to life giving water and nutrients. The roots feed the tree.

The roots of the human soul are our heart and mind, our inner life. What we feed our mind on, tends to shape our conduct and our character.

Jeremiah draws a connection between the roots of a tree and the human heart and mind in verse 9 where he says: The heart is deceitful above all things and beyond cure. Who can understand it?

In this context the heart is not the physical blood pump in your chest. It’s the heart in a spiritual sense. What we today would think of as the mind, emotions and will, our inner life where decisions are made. 

Jeremiah is putting his finger on the root cause of the problem. It’s a Catch 22 situation. There is no way we can cure our minds. The only instrument we have for understanding our minds is our own minds. [3] But because our mind is desperately sick, we can’t accurately diagnose the sickness, let alone treat it.

We might think we are being honest with ourselves, but our mind deceives us. Our conscious mind is blind to what’s going on in our unconscious. We don’t know what we don’t know.

Like the people of centuries past who covered over the problem with lead-based makeup, the very things we think will help become the very things that make matters worse. We have no way out of the vicious cycle, at least not on our own.

Knowing that the Lord is able to search our heart and examine our mind and reward each person according to their deeds, is a fearful thought. It means there is no hiding from God. There is no makeup (lead based or otherwise) that can disguise the truth of what we are from God. The Lord sees the whole person from root to fruit and he holds us to account. 

And so we find ourselves praying with Jeremiah, in verse 14: Heal me, O Lord, and I will be healed; save me and I will be saved, for you are the one I praise.

We need God to heal our heart and mind if we are to bear good fruit. 

Conclusion:

Jesus is the answer to Jeremiah’s prayer. Jesus is the one God sent to heal us. Jesus is the source of living water we need to be planted beside. Or to say it more plainly, Jesus is the Word of God and the giver of God’s Spirit. Jesus is our righteousness. Our life and fruitfulness depend on Christ.

As we read in the gospel of John, chapter 7… 

37 On the last and greatest day of the festival, Jesus stood and said in a loud voice, “Let anyone who is thirsty come to me and drink. 38 Whoever believes in me, as Scripture has said, rivers of living water will flow from within them.” 39 By this he meant the Spirit, whom those who believed in him were later to receive… 

Let us pray…

Merciful God, grant us the grace to put our roots down deep into the soil of your marvellous love. Nourish our souls with the water of your Word and Spirit, that we would be fruitful to the praise of your glory. Through Jesus we pray. Amen.

A Good Question

Introduction:

Good morning everyone.

If you want to get to know someone better, then you need to ask good questions. A good question has a number of characteristics…

For example, a good question is simple and concise, not so long and complicated that the other person gets lost or has to ask you to repeat yourself.

A good question has an honest purpose. By that I mean, you have a good reason for asking the question. You’re not trying to trick or embarrass anyone. You are genuinely interested in learning what the other person thinks. 

A good question is also open-ended, one that invites more than a yes / no answer. A question that engages the other person in conversation and maybe even reveals new insights.

Today we continue our series in the gospel of Mark. This morning’s lectionary reading is Mark 12, verses 28-34. To set the scene, Jesus has arrived in Jerusalem and is now teaching in the temple courts. Hope is running high.  

Up till this point various Jewish groups have been asking Jesus bad questions. Questions designed to catch him out and embarrass him. Long, complicated questions with a dishonest purpose. Questions intended to shut Jesus down.   

But in today’s lectionary reading, an expert in the law asks Jesus a good question. From Mark 12, verse 28 we read…

28 One of the teachers of the law came and heard them debating. Noticing that Jesus had given them a good answer, he asked him, “Of all the commandments, which is the most important?” 29 “The most important one,” answered Jesus, “is this: ‘Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God, the Lord is one. 30 Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength.’ 31 The second is this: ‘Love your neighbour as yourself.’There is no commandment greater than these.” 32 “Well said, teacher,” the man replied. “You are right in saying that God is one and there is no other but him. 33 To love him with all your heart, with all your understanding and with all your strength, and to love your neighbour as yourself is more important than all burnt offerings and sacrifices.” 34 When Jesus saw that he had answered wisely, he said to him, “You are not far from the kingdom of God.” And from then on no one dared ask him any more questions.

May the Spirit of Jesus illuminate God’s word for us.

The most important:

What is the most important part of a building? Is it the roof maybe? Without a roof you would get wet. But then without walls, you wouldn’t be able to put the roof on. So are the walls the most important part?

Well, the walls and the roof are important (certainly more important than the TV or the furnishings) but I reckon the foundation is the most important part.

If the foundation isn’t right, the walls and roof are likely to fall. 

How about a yacht? What’s the most important part of a yacht? Is it the sail? Without the sail the yacht isn’t going anywhere. Or is it the rudder? Without a rudder the yacht could end up on the rocks.

Well, the sail and the rudder are important, but I reckon the yacht’s buoyancy is the most important thing. If the hull takes in water the boat will sink.

What about marriage? What’s the most important aspect of a marriage relationship? Is it having things in common? Is it sex or romance? Is it communication? Well, all those things are helpful to a healthy marriage but, in my view, the most important thing is commitment. In particular, a commitment to one another’s wellbeing.   

Circumstances change and people change throughout the course of a lifetime. Commitment to one another’s wellbeing enables the relationship to function and to flourish through those changes. Commitment is the foundation of marriage. Commitment is the buoyancy keeping a marriage afloat through the storms of life.

In verse 28 we read how one of the teachers of the law heard Jesus give some good answers to some bad questions. Unlike the Herodians and Sadducees, who were out to trap Jesus, this teacher of the law asks Jesus a good question: Of all the commandments, which is the most important?”

This question is simple and concise, it has an honest purpose and it is open-ended.

There are 613 written commandments in the law of Moses, not to mention all the other regulations added by the scribes and Pharisees. With so many rules it would be difficult to see the wood for the trees.

Did one commandment stand out from the rest? Is there one law which serves as a key for interpreting all the other laws? Yes, there is.  

Jesus refers to Deuteronomy 6, verses 4-5, as the most important commandment. These verses are known as the Shema…

Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God, the Lord is one.  5 Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength.

The Shema begins with a command to hear or to listen. The first duty of love is to listen. We can’t obey God unless we know what he wants. Loving God starts with listening to God. 

Interestingly the Shema (the most important, most foundational) commandment includes some theological statements about God…

Firstly, the Lord (Yahweh) is our God. This speaks to Israel’s special covenant relationship with Yahweh. In Jewish and Christian thinking, God is not some impersonal force. God is not ‘the universe’. God is a conscious being, capable of personal relationship.

The idea here is that God is committed to Israel’s wellbeing and indeed to the wellbeing of all his creation. To put it more plainly, the command to love God is prefaced by the reminder that God loves us.    

The Shema also affirms that the Lord (Yahweh) is one. This speaks to the theological belief that there is only one true God, not lots of gods. The Lord God does not have any rivals. He is not fighting to stay on top. The Lord God is all-powerful, almighty. Nothing poses any kind of threat to Israel’s God. Therefore, we can trust the Lord God. We can find security in him.

But wait there’s another layer of theological meaning here. The phrasing,

The Lord is one”, indicates that God has integrity. God is whole, complete, not divided within himself. There is a harmony within God. The Lord is one.

For example, God’s justice is not at odds with his mercy. God’s justice is one with his mercy. When God destroys evil that is both an act of justice and mercy at the same time.  

The substance of the Shema (the most important command) is to love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength.

The Greek word for love here is agapao (or agape). Often when we (English speakers) think of love, we imagine a pleasant warm fuzzy feeling, like falling in love. However, agape love is not always accompanied by a nice feeling.

Agape love is primarily an attitude of the mind and a decision of the will.

To love someone with agape love is to make a conscious choice to act in a way that is good for that person’s wellbeing, irrespective of how we feel.

You see, feelings cannot be commanded. We don’t have much control over whether we like someone or not. Jesus isn’t telling us what we must feel. Rather Jesus is telling us how to behave in relation to God.

Sometimes agape love requires us to go against the grain of our feelings. Thinking about thisin the context of our relationship with God, agape love says, I will remain loyal to God and obey him, even when it feels like God has abandoned me or let me down.   

The Shema says, lovethe Lord your God with all your heart. In general terms the heart, in the Old Testament, represents a person’s inner life, the core of your being where loyalty resides, where desire comes from, and decisions are made. The heart speaks to what you value and where your commitment lies.

To love God with all your heart therefore is to value God above all else.

It means not splitting your loyalty between God and any other thing.

Loving God with all your heart means remaining committed to the Lord God through thick and thin, in sickness and in health, for richer or poorer.

Your soul probably refers to your life force, the spark of life. Your soul is that unseen energy which animates your body. Your personality (your true self) comes from your soul. To love God with all your soul is to love God with all the energy and creativity and personality you possess.

This means being yourself with God. Not trying to be something you’re not. Accepting the way God has made you, being honest with him and enjoying him. Your soul is unique, like your fingerprints. No one can love God in quite the same way you can. No one can give God joy like you can.

Eric Liddell the Olympic sprinter said, “I believe God made me for a purpose – but He also made me fast. And when I run, I feel His pleasure”. For Eric Liddell, running was an expression of his soul. When Eric Liddell ran, he was loving God and this gave God pleasure, a pleasure that Eric could feel in his spirit. 

When do you feel God’s pleasure? Do you feel it when you are singing or when you are baking or when you play an instrument or work in the garden or paint a masterpiece or hang out with your grandkids?

We can’t always be doing the things we love. But whenever we can, we should spend time in our own soul, doing the things that God made us to do, the things that give God pleasure.  

The soul and the body go together. You can’t really have one without the other. A body without a soul is like a guitar without strings or a computer without software. It’s dead. Likewise, a soul without a body is like a surgeon with no hands or a pianist with no piano. The soul needs the body to express itself.

And so loving God with all your soul goes hand in hand with loving God with all your strength. On one level your strength is your physical power and stamina. But it’s more than that. Your strength is your skill and your aptitude as well.

Are you good with your hands? How might you use your practical skills to love God? Maybe by doing odd jobs for the those who are in need? 

Are you good with children? How might you use your aptitude with children to love God? Maybe by volunteering to help in Kids’ Church?

Your strength extends to the resources you possess too. Your strength might include things like your time, your money and your social connections. Therefore, to love God with all your strength means being a good steward of the time and money God has given you. Being generous with God and the poor.

Loving God then, is not just something we do on Sundays or special occasions like Christmas or Easter. Loving God is something we do everyday.

One thing we notice is that Jesus adds in loving God with all your mind as well. The original Shema doesn’t explicitly mention loving God with your mind, but it is surely implied by the terms heart, soul and strength.

Perhaps Jesus adds in loving God with your mind because he is talking with an educated man. For the teacher of the law, the mind (or one’s understanding) had special significance.

The point seems to be that God’s law is not something that can be blindly followed without thinking about it. Figuring out how to apply God’s law of love in a messy unstable world requires mental effort. It requires us to slow down and think through the implications, not just for ourselves but also for God and our neighbour.   

We probably shouldn’t make too much of the distinction between heart, soul, mind and strength. While each of these words adds an interesting layer of meaning, there’s also quite a bit of overlap between them, like a Venn diagram.

The main point here is to love God with your whole being. Love God with all that you are and all that you have. That is the first and most important commandment according to Jesus. That is the key to understanding all the other commandments.

In verse 31 of Mark 12, Jesus goes on to say: “The second is this: ‘Love your neighbour as yourself.’There is no commandment greater than these.”

Loving your neighbour as yourself is another way of saying, ‘do unto others as you would have them do unto you’. Or treat others the way you would like to be treated. Of course, loving your neighbour as yourself implies that you take good care of yourself too, as Murray emphasised four weeks ago. 

The Greek word Jesus uses here for loving your neighbour is agape, the same word he uses for loving God. As I mentioned earlier, agape is an attitude of the mind and a decision of the will.

The Jews of the first century would have understood their neighbour to be a fellow Jew. But as Ewan reminded us, three weeks ago, Jesus’ parable of the Good Samaritan demonstrates that your neighbour could be anyone you meet.

Whether you know your neighbour or not, whether you like your neighbour or not, God’s command of agape love requires you to act for their wellbeing, to the extent you can. Of course, each of us comes with our own limitations. It is not always in our power to help our neighbour as much as we might want to. 

Leviticus 19 lists various practical examples of loving your neighbour…

‘Do not steal. Do not deceive one another. Do not pervert justice. Do not spread slander. Do not hate your brother in your heart. Do not seek revenge or bear a grudge… but love your neighbour as yourself.’   

The teacher of the Law asks Jesus a good question: ‘What is the most important commandment?’ Jesus’ reply weaves together two commandments as one. Love God with your whole being and love your neighbour as yourself.

Jesus is making the point that love for God cannot be separated from love for your neighbour. And love for your neighbour cannot be separated from love for yourself.

It’s like the apostle John says in his first letter to the early church…  

19 We love because God first loved us. 20 If we say we love God, but hate others, we are liars. For we cannot love God, whom we have not seen, if we do not love others, whom we have seen. 21 The command that Christ has given us is this: whoever loves God must love others also.

God is one. Human beings are made in the image of God and therefore to love God is to love people. These all go together.

In verse 32 of Mark 12, the teacher of the law responds positively to Jesus.

The lawyer asked a good question and he found common ground with Jesus.

Normally Jesus is at odds with the religious leaders. But Jesus does not prejudge this man by his experience of other religious experts. Jesus takes each person as he finds them.

More than this, Jesus leaves room for the teacher of the law to add his own insight. And what an insight it is. To love God and to love your neighbour as yourself is more important than all burnt offerings and sacrifices.

This might seem ho hum to us, but it was a huge admission from an expert in the law. This religious leader was implying that the temple system with all its rituals and sacrifices wasn’t all that important, compared to love.

If loving God and neighbour is the foundation and framework of the building, then ritual sacrifice is like the furnishings. Just as the carpet and curtains make no difference to the structural integrity of the building, so too ritual sacrifice makes no difference to our relationship with God. Love is what really matters.

And Jesus couldn’t agree more. In fact, Jesus’ once for all sacrifice on the cross fulfills the law in this regard, doing away with the need for a temple building and ritual sacrifice. This teacher of the law is quite progressive for his time. Jesus commends the man saying, “You are not far from the kingdom of God.” 

Conclusion:

One of my favourite love stories would have to be Matthew’s account of how Jesus’ parents, Mary and Joseph, got together. Jesus’ stepfather, Joseph, shows us what it means to love God and love your neighbour as yourself.

Mary was engaged to Joseph when Joseph found out Mary was pregnant.

Joseph did not know who the father was. It appeared as though Mary had committed adultery and the letter of the Law stipulated that Mary should be put to death for her crime.

Joseph had every right to feel angry, but he did not let his feelings get the better of him. Joseph took some time to love God with his mind. He considered the situation before deciding what he would do.

If Mary had cheated on him, then his love for God meant he could not marry her, for God does not condone adultery. Also, Joseph’s love for himself prevented him from marrying a woman who (it seemed) did not care for him.

But Joseph’s love for his neighbour meant he could not insist on Mary’s execution. If Mary was killed, her unborn child would die also. That would be taking an innocent life, that would be unfair. 

Because Joseph was a righteous man, he decided to divorce Mary quietly and save her from public disgrace. This would leave Mary free to marry the man who got her pregnant and two lives would be saved. In this way, Joseph obeyed God’s law of love.     

As it turned out, God let Joseph in on the secret that Mary had conceived by the Holy Spirit. Mary had been faithful after all. So Joseph went ahead and married Mary. The rest is history.

Let us pray. Gracious God, forgive us for the times we lose sight of what is most important. Help us to love you with understanding. Help us to live in our own soul and to feel your pleasure. Help us to support the wellbeing of those around us and so glorify you. Through Jesus we pray. Amen.

Guard Your Heart

Introduction:

Good morning everyone.

Today we continue our series in the book of Proverbs. Proverbs offers practical wisdom for living. It gives handy life hacks for people starting out in the world. 

Our message today focuses on chapter 4, verses 20-27. As we move through these verses see how many different body parts you recognize. From Proverbs 4, verse 20 we read…

20 My son, pay attention to what I say; turn your ear to my words. 21 Do not let them out of your sight, keep them within your heart; 22 for they are life to those who find them and health to one’s whole body. 23 Above all else, guard your heart, for it is the wellspring of life. 24 Keep your mouth free of perversity; keep corrupt talk far from your lips. 25 Let your eyes look straight ahead; fix your gaze directly before you. 26 Give careful thought to the paths for your feet and be steadfast in all your ways. 27 Do not turn to the right or the left; keep your foot from evil.

May the Spirit of Jesus illuminate God’s word for us.

Six different body parts are mentioned in these verses: the ear, the heart, the mouth, the lips, the eyes and the feet, plus the body as a whole is mentioned once. Following the path of wisdom is something that involves a person’s whole being.

The heart’s trajectory:

The organ that connects all the body parts is the heart.

For most people today, the heart (in a metaphorical sense) is considered the seat of a person’s feelings or emotions. For us, matters of the heart have to do with one’s affections and romantic love, in contrast to the head which is concerned with logic and reasoning.

People in the ancient world didn’t have the same head / heart dichotomy that we do. They didn’t separate matters of the head and the heart.

In the Old Testament, the heart is a metaphor for a person’s inner life, the core of their being. The heart includes your mind, emotions and will. It is essentially that part of yourself which is concerned with decision making.

The heart, in ancient thought, is sort of like the parliament or the board room of a person’s body and soul. The decisions made in one’s heart set the path for one’s life. The heart is like the rudder of a ship; it determines the course you take.

Airplane pilots are taught the 1 in 60 rule, which states that one-degree error in heading will result in the aircraft being off course by one mile for every 60 miles travelled. Which means that after 120 miles you will be two miles off course and so on.

One degree might not seem like much but it could mean the difference between arriving safely or crashing into a mountain.   

Repeatedly, throughout Proverbs 4, the father pleads for his children to listen and pay attention to his words of wisdom because following the father’s teaching sets the course for the young person’s life. If they are even one-degree off, it could mean the difference between life and death.  

Verse 21 reads: Do not let my words out of your sight, keep them within your heart; This is a poetic way of saying, commit the things I teach you to memory. Do not forget them. Keep my words of wisdom front of mind always.

The world we live in is very different from the ancient world. People in Old Testament times did not have the internet. They couldn’t google something on their phone. They couldn’t watch a Ted Talk or a YouTube clip at will. Books were not readily available either. So they had to remember things.

People learned by listening carefully and committing what they heard to memory. That involved time, concentration and repetition. Gaining and retaining wisdom took some effort but it was worth the effort because it could save your life.

That being said, we should not blindly follow everything we are taught. From time to time we need to check if the wisdom we follow is set to the right course. Because if it’s not, we will find ourselves further and further off track as time passes.

The Pharisees provide a classic example of how a particular tradition of wisdom got off track and led people away from God. In Mark 7, we read how some teachers of the law took issue with the way Jesus’ disciples did not wash their hands in the proper way before eating. Jesus answered them…

“You put aside God’s command and obey human teachings. You have a clever way of rejecting God’s law in order to uphold your own teaching. 10 For Moses commanded, ‘Respect your father and your mother,’ …11 But you teach that if people have something they could use to help their father or mother, but say, ‘This is Corban’ (which means, it belongs to God), 12 they are excused from helping their father or mother. 13 In this way the teaching you pass on to others cancels out the word of God…”

Somewhere along the way the Pharisees’ tradition of wisdom got off course by one-degree and, over time, it led them away from keeping God’s law. Jesus provided a much needed critique of the Pharisees’ traditions, to get them back on course before they crashed.     

We critique what we are taught by measuring it against the Bible. Indeed, the Bible acts as a ruler and a protractor to inform our heart and help set a good course for our life.

Before we can critique the tradition of wisdom passed on to us, though, we must first take the trouble to understand it properly. Don’t be that person who discards everything just because one thing isn’t quite right. The traditions we inherit usually contain a valuable kernel of truth. Don’t throw the baby out with the bath water.     

Guard your heart:

Returning to Proverbs 4. The emphasis on retaining wisdom is reinforced again in verse 23 which reads: Above all else, guard your heart, for it is the wellspring of life.                                                                          
When I first read this verse I thought, okay if the heart basically equates to the mind, in the world of Proverbs, then guarding my heart (or my mind) means being really careful about what I let into my thought life.

See no evil, hear no evil. Don’t watch too much rubbish on TV. Avoid conspiracy theories and dodgey websites. Read wholesome Christian books and listen to plenty of worship music. Keep bad stuff out. Put good stuff in.

Like the apostle Paul says in his letter to the Philippians: Whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable – if anything is excellent or praise worthy, think about such things.  

While it is generally a good idea to be careful what we feed our mind on, that is not exactly what Proverbs 4 is saying. A wellspring flows outwards. If your heart and mind are a wellspring, then verse 23 is saying be careful about what you let out of your heart and mind.

As one commentator puts it: To guard the heart is to be prudent about the heart’s outgoings, to tend with diligence and discretion to how one expresses one’s thoughts and feelings.[1] In other words, develop a good filter.

You may have heard on the news this past week that about 40% of Wellington’s water supply is seeping away in leaks because the pipe infrastructure is old and deteriorating faster than we can fix it.

This means we are likely to face water restrictions over the next few months, especially if it is a long dry summer as expected.

In this situation, guarding the water supply is more about keeping the water in than anything else. Likewise, guarding the wellspring of your heart has more to do with preventing leaks than it does keeping bad things out. 

To use another metaphor. The risk with nuclear power plants is not what might get in but rather what might leak out. You want clean energy out of the nuclear power plant. You don’t want radioactive material to escape.

Jesus understood there is good and bad in the human heart and that guarding the heart means not letting the bad stuff out. In Mark 7, Jesus says…

20 “What comes out of a person is what defiles them. 21 For it is from within, out of a person’s heart, that evil thoughts come—sexual immorality, theft, murder, 22 adultery, greed, malice, deceit, lewdness, envy, slander, arrogance and folly. 23 All these evils come from inside and defile a person.”

Verses 24-27 of Proverbs 4 spell out what ‘guarding the heart’ looks like.

Firstly, guarding your heart means being careful about how you talk. There is a direct line between your mind and your mouth. Verse 24 reads: Keep your mouth free of perversity; keep corrupt talk far from your lips.

Before you say what’s on your mind, stop and T.H.I.N.K. Is it true? Is it helpful? Is it inspiring? Is it necessary? Is it kind? Grace and truth is what we are aiming for with our talk.

We don’t always understand the power of our words. When we say something out loud it carries more weight than a mere thought. We have a tendency to start believing the things we say, even when those things are not quite true.

Your mouth is like a scalpel. It needs to be handled with surgical precision for it has potential to do good or harm. You don’t need to say everything that is in your heart and mind. Some things are better left unsaid.

Now this advice to measure and restrain your words seems to fly in the face of contemporary wisdom. The thinking in our society today is more attuned to the philosophy of ‘better out than in’. Unrestrained talk is considered to be therapy or catharsis. 

Proverbs 4 challenges this notion. It helps us to find the middle way between stiff upper lip stoicism and verbal diarrhea. Proverbs 4 is saying, guard your heart by being careful about what you say and who you say it to. When you need to share something personal, find a trustworthy listener.

Verse 25 offers another way to guard your heart: Let your eyes look straight ahead; fix your gaze directly before you.

Avoid temptation in other words. Don’t allow yourself to be distracted by evil. Do not covet. Do not look over the fence at what your neighbour has.

This idea of ‘fixing your gaze directly before you’, implies you have a goal or a vision for your life, something good you are aiming for. The goal for Christians is to follow Jesus. To love God, love your neighbour and love yourself. Or, as the prophet Micah puts it, to do justly, love mercy and walk humbly with God.

This being said, you need to allow some distraction in your life. It doesn’t work to be super focused all the time. If you are too intense you’ll end up blowing a gasket or turning into a Pharisee.

It’s okay to stop and smell the roses every now and then. It’s okay to have time off when you need a rest. It’s okay to watch the rugby or to have a hobby. The point is, avoid temptation to evil. Don’t torture yourself by looking at what you cannot have. Remember what you are aiming for and stick with it.   

When you are driving a car, it’s important to keep your eyes on the road. Otherwise you might end up in a ditch or over a bank. Same thing in life generally. Where your eyes wander, your feet follow.

As we read in verse 26…

Give careful thought to the paths for your feet and be steadfast in all your ways.   

This verse is talking about the regular rhythms and routines we keep in our lives. Part of guarding your heart involves maintaining healthy patterns of work and rest, eating and sleeping, giving and receiving, worship and play, socialising and solitude.

So, for example, if you have had a very busy week, then giving careful thought to your path might mean planning a quiet weekend, especially if you are an introvert. Give yourself a chance to recover and regroup.

Or, if you know you have some away trips planned with work, then giving careful thought to your path might involve prioritising time to spend with your family before you go away and after you get back, in order to keep your relationships solid.     

Part of guarding your heart involves thinking about the path you are on and where this will lead you.

Verse 27 reads: Do not turn to the right or the left; keep your foot from evil.

The assumption of verse 27 is that the young person, who is receiving instruction here, is already on the right path. They don’t need to repent or change their ways. They simply need to stay on track and not pursue evil.

Not turning to the right or the left means having the strength to say ‘no’. Not being easily swayed by those around you.

We live in a relatively permissive society, where almost anything goes. Personal freedom is one of the idols of our time. Many people think they have a right to do whatever they want. Some might call it a spirit of entitlement. The discipline of saying ‘no’ to ourselves does not come naturally to us.

The strength to say ‘no’ comes from having a clear sense of your own identity. Knowing who you are and whose you are. When Satan tempted Jesus in the wilderness, Jesus was able to say ‘no’ because he knew who he was. Jesus was deeply aware that he was God’s son and he knew the Father loved him.

Conclusion:

Among other things, Proverbs 4 reminds us to guard our heart for it steers the course of our life.

Guarding your heart isn’t just about what you let into your heart, it actually has more to do with what you let out of your heart.

We guard our heart by being careful with the words we speak, careful with what we set our sights on, careful with the path we walk day by day and careful to say ‘no’ when we need to.

Introduction:

Kai ora whanau and good morning everyone.

Have you ever looked up into the night sky and tried to count the stars? It’s difficult isn’t it. How many stars do you think you can see with the naked eye?

Well, someone from Yale University did count what can be seen and they catalogued 9096 stars. However, because the earth blocks the view, you can only see half that amount (around 4,500) on a dark the night.

The actual number of stars in the universe is not really known, mainly because we haven’t been able to locate the edge of the universe yet. God’s creation is massive on a scale that we simply cannot imagine. It is awe inspiring.

During the past few weeks we have been looking at a Psalm each Sunday. Today we focus on Psalm 19. This is one of C.S. Lewis’ favourites. From verse 1 of Psalm 19 we read…  

The heavens declare the glory of God; the skies proclaim the work of his hands. Day after day they pour forth speech; night after night they reveal knowledge. They have no speech, they use no words; no sound is heard from them. Yet their voice goes out into all the earth, their words to the ends of the world. In the heavens God has pitched a tent for the sun. It is like a bridegroom coming out of his chamber, like a champion rejoicing to run his course. It rises at one end of the heavens and makes its circuit to the other; nothing is deprived of its warmth. The law of the Lord is perfect, refreshing the soul. The statutes of the Lord are trustworthy, making wise the simple. The precepts of the Lord are right, giving joy to the heart. The commands of the Lord are radiant, giving light to the eyes. The fear of the Lord is pure, enduring forever. The decrees of the Lord are firm, and all of them are righteous. 10 They are more precious than gold, than much pure gold; they are sweeter than honey, than honey from the honeycomb. 11 By them your servant is warned; in keeping them there is great reward. 12 But who can discern their own errors? Forgive my hidden faults. 13 Keep your servant also from wilful sins; may they not rule over me. Then I will be blameless, innocent of great transgression. 14 May the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be pleasing in your sight, Lord, my Rock and my Redeemer.

May the Spirit of Jesus illuminate God’s word for us.

This Psalm of David falls neatly into three parts…

The first part, in verses 1-6, points our attention to the sky above. The sky, and all that is in it, are God’s handiwork; his creation revealing his glory.  The second part, in verses 7-10, focuses on the written law, which reveals God’s will for humankind and shows us how to enjoy life. And in the third part, verses 11-14, we read about David’s response of worship from the heart.

The sky – God’s creation:

How far away is the closest neighbouring star to our solar system? Is it…

A.) 42 trillion, 208 billion (42,208,000,000,000) kilometres away

B.) 48,000,000 (48 million) miles away

C.) 4.2465 light years away, or

D.) None of the above

Both A.) and C.) are correct answers. They are two different ways of measuring the same distance.

Proxima Centauri is the closest star to our solar system. It would take about four years and three months travelling at the speed of light to reach Proxima Centauri.

To put that into perspective it would take the Voyager space craft around 73,000 years to get there. And if you were to try and walk that distance on foot, it would take about 215 million years. You would need quite a bit of scroggin for that hike.

Psalm 19 begins with David looking up at the sky. Not just the night sky but the sky during daytime as well. I imagine as a shepherd, and then a soldier, David had plenty of opportunity to look at the sky.

David would not have known about Proxima Centauri but he would have been pretty good at reading the weather by the cloud patterns. Perhaps too, if he ever had to travel a significant distance, he may have navigated by the stars at night.

But this is probably not what David meant when he talked about the sky revealing knowledge. The sort of knowledge David was thinking about had to do with God.   

Some people in the ancient world worshipped the sun, moon and stars as gods. They thought the stars governed their fate, sort of like people who follow horoscopes, except the ancients were more serious about it. But when David looked up at the sky, he saw God’s handiwork.

The sun, moon, stars and sky are simply God’s creatures, carrying out the functions God made them for. What might we learn about God by looking at the sky and the starry hosts?

Well, as the apostle Paul points out in his letter to the Romans, we learn that there is a God. God the creator exists. Paul writes:  Ever since God created the world, his invisible qualities, both his eternal power and his divine nature, have been clearly seen; they are perceived in the things that God has made. 

The fact that the universe is so big and beautiful speaks to God’s power and grace. God is intelligent. He is both an artist and an engineer. Nothing is too difficult for God.

Furthermore, as anyone who likes looking at clouds and sunsets will tell you, the sky is never the same. There is an infinite variety of colour and shapes and moods and creativity in each day. Which tells us, God is not boring. God has an imagination and he has given us a mind to think with and make connections too.   

Here’s another science question for you. How many earths could fit inside the sun? Is it…

  1.  Nine earths
  2.  Six billion earths
  3.  One million, three hundred thousand earths, or
  4.  No one knows, it’s impossible to calculate

Well, the answer is C.) Apparently it would take 1.3 million earths all squished together to fill the sun.

The sun is 1,391,000 kilometres across. That’s about 109 times the diameter of the earth. The sun weighs 333,000 times as much as the earth. That is a huge mass. But if you are not already feeling small enough, our sun is relatively tiny by comparison with others. The largest known star in the universe is thought to be about 1,700 times as wide as our sun. And God made them all. I know, it blows your mind.

In verses 4-6 of Psalm 19 David narrows his focus from the whole sky to just the sun during the daytime. Obviously these verses are poetry; they are not intended to be scientific. In verse 5, David compares the sun to a bridegroom coming out of his chamber (after the first night of his honeymoon) and also to a champion athlete rejoicing to run his course.

The imagery here is of joy and strength and vitality. God made the sun to give life and warmth and happiness to the creatures of the earth. The sun is a reliable source of energy for us.

Just as the sun’s heat is felt everywhere, so too God’s glory is revealed everywhere. However, the glory of God is not experienced in the same way by everyone. For those who love the Lord and walk in his ways it is a comfort. But for those who do wrong it is a burden.

As we read earlier in the service, from the book of Job chapter 38: The light of day is too bright for the wicked and restrains them from doing violence.       

God’s power is like the power of the sun. We cannot get too close without being consumed. Likewise, God’s glory is like the light of the sun. Sunlight enables us to see clearly but we dare not look directly at it for fear of going blind.

David’s image of the sun, as a metaphor for God’s life giving power and glory, lends itself naturally to the next part of his psalm, which focuses on the law, the revealed will of God.

The law – God’s will:

Here’s a different type of question for you, moving from science to history. How many commandments are there in the Law of Moses? Are there…

  4.  613

Well, in Jewish tradition there are 613 commandments, so the answer is D.) But I would also accept C.) 10 commandments, because it’s a bit of a trick question.

613 commandments may seem like a lot but, by comparison with New Zealand law, it’s not that many. When I did a search of all the Acts of legislation on the Parliamentary Counsel Office website it came up with 1,872 results and that does not include the Bills before Parliament or other legal instruments.  

In verses 7-9 of Psalm 19 David uses six different terms to describe God’s law. The Hebrew word translated as law is torah. Torah can also mean teaching or guidance. Depending on how you think about it, the torah is at least the first five books of the Bible but it can mean the whole of the Old Testament.   

In the context of Psalm 19 the law or torah is a comprehensive term for God’s revealed will, hence the variety of terms used to describe it. The law isn’t just a list of commandments. The law is God’s way of telling us what he wants us to know about himself. The Law is also God’s way of telling us how to live well and enjoy life.

God’s law is perfect, without blemish and it refreshes the soul. The image here is of finding a spring or well of fresh water, when you are parched and thirsty.

Have you ever noticed how, when you read the Bible, God’s Spirit often shows you a verse or an idea in a new and fresh way that you haven’t seen before? That happens even with passages we are familiar with. God’s will, revealed in the Bible, never gets tired or old. There is yet fresh light to shed on God’s word.

The thing is, the refreshment we experience doesn’t just happen in our head. It happens in our soul. Your soul is your life force, your vitality, your energy, the core of your being, the unique finger print of your true identity.

Just as your body is refreshed when you actually drink water from the well, so too your soul (your inner life) is refreshed is when you actually do God’s will, rather than just reading about it.

The doing of God’s will has many benefits. Verse 8, in particular says: ‘The precepts of the Lord are right, giving joy to the heart.’

Precepts are precise rules. They say the devil is in the details. God’s precepts take the devil out of the details. God’s precepts are precise, they fit perfectly like a hand in a glove or like a carpenter’s dove tail joint.

If you are a crafts person, if you like to knit for example, or turn wood, or do origami, or make something with your hands, then you will understand the feeling of satisfaction and joy when you nail it, when you don’t drop a stitch and when everything fits into place as it is supposed to.

Or if you like assembling jigsaw puzzles, you will know that feeling of satisfaction and joy you get when you fit the pieces together. It can be frustrating getting to the end of the puzzle and discovering that you have one or two pieces missing so you can’t complete it.

With God’s precepts, none of the pieces are missing. God’s precise rules fit together perfectly with his law of love. There is joy and satisfaction in discovering for yourself, through your own experience, how it all fits.

To give you an example from the Scriptures, one of God’s precepts is the rule that farmers should let the poor glean in their fields after the harvesters. To glean means to pick up the left over grain.

This is a small but significant detail in the story of Ruth, without which the story would be incomplete. Gleaning in Boaz’ field provides Ruth with the opportunity to meet Boaz and to eventually marry him and have children. God’s precept, to let the poor glean, results in great joy for the whole community.

For Ruth & Naomi & Boaz, God’s law is indeed sweeter than honey and more precious than gold. Obedience to God’s law rewards them by making their future secure and their hope real.    

God’s will (revealed through his precepts) doesn’t always feel joyful or satisfying to begin with. Sometimes following God’s precepts can be painful at first. Sometimes we have to sow in tears before we can reap with joy.

Like when Jesus said, turn the other cheek when someone strikes you and if someone insults you, ask God to bless that person. As hard as that is, doing what Jesus instructs puts us on a pathway to joy. As Jesus said, happy are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, they will be satisfied.

As Christians we believe that Jesus fulfils God’s law perfectly. Or to say it another way, Jesus shows us through his life and example what it looks like to do God’s will. With Jesus, none of the puzzle pieces are missing. All of God’s precepts and commands and statutes come into alignment and fit perfectly.     

In verse 9 of Psalm 19 David says: The fear of the Lord is pure, enduring forever. We talked a little about the fear of the Lord last week. Fear in the sense of reverence and respect is the proper response to God’s word.

In verses 11-14 David gives an example of what the fear of the Lord looks like in practice. The third part of Psalm 19 describes David’s heart response of worship.

The heart – David’s response:

Earlier in this sermon I talked about the stars that are visible to the naked eye in the night sky. Although over 9,000 stars are visible we can only ever see about half of those from where we stand. That’s because the earth itself gets in the way. Half the stars are hidden from our view by the planet we are on.

Human consciousness is a bit like that. We might think we know everything there is to know about ourselves when in fact there are some facets of our personality which are hidden from our view. Our ego gets in the way.

The psychologist, Carl Jung, had a name for that part of ourselves that we can’t see. He called it the shadow side. Other people might be able to see what’s in your shadow, and God can certainly see your shadow, but you can’t.

Hopefully as we journey through life we become more self-aware. This means we become more aware of what is in our shadow side. Some of the stuff in your shadow you may not like. But the shadow side is not all bad. There is also some goodness in there. We are complex creatures, fearfully and wonderfully made.

In verse 12 of Psalm 19, David shows real insight into the human psyche when he says: But who can discern their own errors? Forgive my hidden faults.

David is speaking here of his shadow side. That part of his personality or soul that is hidden from himself but seen by God and others close to him.

There’s an advert on TV at the moment warning people not to speed when they drive. In this ad an apprentice is being driven to the worksite by his boss. The boss thinks he is a good driver but in reality the boss is a dangerous driver who takes unnecessary risks.

Everyone who has ever driven with him knows this, except the boss himself. It is a fault hidden in his shadow. The apprentice unwittingly reveals the truth that no one wants a ride with the boss because they don’t feel safe with him.

We can become aware of our hidden faults (the stuff in our shadow that we can’t see) in any number of ways. Through understanding the dreams we have at night. By living in close quarters with someone else, like when you get married. Or by having to make a difficult decision under pressure.

It is not always pleasant to discover what’s in your shadow but the truth of it will set you free.

In verse 13 David addresses those willful sins, meaning those sins he is aware of. David doesn’t want any bad habits or addictions to rule his life. David wants God to be the captain of his soul.

Willful sins might include things like gossip or getting drunk or adultery or gambling or laziness or any pattern of behaviour really that causes us to lose control of ourselves. David is essentially asking God to help him exercise self-control.

Here’s another science question for you. How many neurons are there in the average human brain? Is it…

  1.  86 billion
  2.  14 billion
  3.  400 billion, or
  4.  1 million

The latest estimate by scientists is A.) around 86 billion neurons. A neuron (in case you are wondering) is a special kind of cell which transmits chemical and electrical information throughout the body.

And so we come to that part of David’s psalm, made famous by the pop group Boney M. May the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be pleasing in your sight, Lord, my Rock and my Redeemer.

Normally the heart, in ancient Hebrew thought, refers to what we might call the mind, the seat of human consciousness.

The heart is more than just our brain with its 86 billion neurons. The heart includes our thoughts and feelings and decision making faculties; that part of our inner self which cannot be examined under a microscope.

The mouth speaks what the heart (or mind) is full of. Sometimes we say things that we don’t mean or that we never intended to say. Those unintentional words come from our heart, from our unconscious mind.      

David is well aware that God is not impressed by externals. God looks at the heart (or the inner workings) of a person. And so David does not respond by sacrificing a goat or a lamb in worship to God. David’s act of worship is a thought life that is pleasing to the Lord. His is an offering of self-control and pure praise.

Conclusion:

It is notable that the closing words of the song describe David’s relationship with God. The Lord, Yahweh, is David’s rock and redeemer. The Lord, Jesus, is our rock and redeemer. As a rock, Jesus is our security, our refuge and a firm place to stand in a hostile world.

And as a redeemer, Jesus is our Saviour, the one who rescues us from the enemy within the human heart; both the enemy we are aware of and the enemy we don’t see in our shadow.

The surprising thing is that the Spirit of Jesus often redeems us, not by destroying the enemy within, but by helping us to make friends with him so that we may be at peace with ourselves.    

Let us pray…

Father God, you are the maker of a universe so vast and so beautiful that we cannot comprehend it. You are truly awesome. Nothing is too difficult for you.

You are also our maker, the creator of the human heart in all its wonderful complexity. Thank you for your Son Jesus who fulfils your law and reveals your will to us.

Redeem our minds and guide our words. May our lives be an offering of self-control, pleasing and acceptable in your sight O Lord, for you are our security and our Saviour. Amen.

Introduction:

Some of you may have seen the movie Rocketman recently

  • It’s a bio pic about the life of Elton John
  • Elton John is of course an incredibly talented musician, but he didn’t write all those hits songs on his own – many of his songs are a collaboration with Bernie Taupin
  • Bernie was the lyricist – he wrote the words and gave them to Elton who then put them to music.

Last week we began a new sermon series called ‘Anthems’

  • In this series we are looking at the lyrics of one hymn or Christian worship song each week to see how that song informs our thinking about God and how it connects with Scripture and the history of our faith.
  • The purpose is not to find fault with the words but to help us interpret the songs in the best possible light.

Today’s song is called, Create in me a clean heart

  • This song is a collaboration between king David, Keith Green and the Holy Spirit
  • The lyrics were written by David roughly 3,000 years ago, I’m not sure who wrote the tune we sing it to but it was covered by Keith Green about 40 years ago.
  • Before we get to king David though, let’s consider Keith Green’s life

Keith Green:

For Keith Green it was all about glorifying God. This is what Keith says…

The only music minister to whom the Lord will say, ‘Well done, thy good and faithful servant’, is the one whose life proves what their lyrics are saying, and to whom music is the least important part of their life. Glorifying the only worthy One has to be the minister’s most important goal.  

Keith Green was born in 1953 is New York, into a show biz family

  • Like king David, Keith was Jewish, although unlike David, Keith’s family didn’t practice the Jewish faith
  • Keith was genuinely gifted, a child star. At the age of 11 he landed a five-year contract with industry giant Decca Records
  • Time magazine hailed him as a ‘prepubescent dreamboat” who “croons in a voice trembling with conviction…”
  • Keith was poised to become the next teen heart throb until Donny Osmond beat him to it. Worldly success didn’t happen for Keith.

In the 1960’s, at the age of 15, Keith ran away from home in search of girls, drugs and the promise of universal love preached by the hippie movement

  • This was a time when the west was discovering the east and so Keith looked to eastern religions to try and find spiritual truth
  • As he devoured the writings of the religious ‘masters’ one thing struck him as odd: their teachings kept referring to Jesus Christ, but Jesus was at the bottom of Keith’s list.
  • Eventually, one day in 1973 after much trial and error, when he had exhausted every other option Keith bought a cross, put it on and alone, through tears prayed in desperation, “Jesus, if you’re there, show yourself to me.” And Jesus did. The love of Jesus broke through.

In the gospel Jesus says, those who have been forgiven much, love much.

  • Keith Green had been forgiven much and so his love for Jesus was very strong. Keith had a tremendous energy and passion to see others come to faith in Jesus and it showed in the songs he wrote 
  • Between 1977 and 1982 Keith released five gospel albums
  • But he wasn’t just a performer – Keith was the real deal.
  • He and his wife Melody opened their home in radical hospitality to people in need and they gave away most of the money they earned
  • They also wrote an evangelical magazine called Last Days  
  • Some people saw Keith Green as a prophet, because his songs called the church to repentance, but he was never comfortable with that label.

Sadly, in July 1982, just a few months before his 29th birthday, Keith died in a plane crash. It was around this time I became a Christian and was baptized.

King David:

Create in me a clean heart is a simple song based on verses 10-12 of Psalm 51

  • It is essentially a prayer for conversion from the inside out – a heartfelt request for real and lasting change to one’s self

The sub-title to psalm 51 reads: A Psalm of David, when the prophet Nathan came to him, after he had gone into Bathsheba.

  • To put you in the picture, David has, by this stage, been king for a number of years and has enjoyed quite a bit of success
  • While his army is away fighting David stays home in his palace
  • One evening he looks out over his balcony and sees a beautiful woman bathing. Like the Bruce Springsteen song, David is on fire.
  • Maybe it is the loneliness of leadership?
  • Maybe it’s the corrupting influence of power?
  • Or maybe David has simply grown complacent in his prosperity?
  • Whatever the reason, David must have this woman and invites her to his room. Her name is Bathsheba.
  • One thing leads to another and Bathsheba gets pregnant.

This is not a good look for David. David wants to cover his tracks, to hide what he has done

  • Bathsheba is married to Uriah the Hittite. Uriah is a good guy. He is actually away fighting in David’s army    
  • David calls Uriah back from the front line, tries to get him drunk and then sends him home in the hope he will sleep with Bathsheba
  • That way no one will know what David has done – everyone will think the baby is Uriah’s.
  • Well not quite everyone. God knows. But David puts God out of his mind. David behaves as though God does not exist. Practical atheism.

Unfortunately for David, Uriah is a real boy scout and instead of going home to get reacquainted with his wife, Uriah sleeps on the doorstep of David’s palace.

  • He can’t stand the thought of taking any comfort for himself while his brothers in arms are sleeping rough in fox holes.
  • This means David has to resort to Plan B. He sends Uriah back to the front and a messenger follows.
  • The message is for Joab, the commander of David’s army. David wants Joab to put Uriah where the fighting is heaviest and then fall back so Uriah gets killed by the enemy.
  • Joab is a soldier. He follows orders and it is done. Uriah dies in battle and, after the time of mourning, Bathsheba becomes David’s wife.

David thinks he is in the clear. Yes, he’s having trouble sleeping and like Lady MacBeth he just can’t seem to get rid of that damn spot, but at least his reputation is intact. Then Nathan, the prophet, turns up

  • Nathan is wise in his approach. He doesn’t confront the issue head on. That would only make David angry and defensive.
  • Instead Nathan goes for the sucker punch. He tells David a parable [1]              

“There were two men who lived in the same town; one was rich and the other poor. The rich man had many cattle and sheep, while the poor man had only one lamb, which he had bought. He took care of it, and it grew up in his home with his children. He would feed it some of his own food, let it drink from his cup, and hold it in his lap. The lamb was like a daughter to him. One day a visitor arrived at the rich man’s home. The rich man didn’t want to kill one of his own animals to fix a meal for him; instead, he took the poor man’s lamb and prepared a meal for his guest.”

David became very angry at the rich man and said, “I swear by the living Lord that the man who did this ought to die! For having done such a cruel thing, he must pay back four times as much as he took.”

  • Then Nathan said to David, “You are that man”.

All at once David knew it saying, ‘I have sinned against the Lord’. Then he goes on to compose Psalm 51.

Psalm 51:

As I said before, the words we sung earlier are just a handful of lines from David’s original song.

  • They capture the essence of the psalm but to understand them properly we need to hear them in the context of the whole
  • From verse 1 we read…

1 Have mercy on me, O God, according to your steadfast love; according to your abundant mercy blot out my transgressions. 2 Wash me thoroughly from my iniquity, and cleanse me from my sin.

These opening verses summarise the psalm – David wants mercy from God. Previously he had wanted justice. Now that he sees himself as he is, he wants mercy.

  • David’s plea for mercy shows what he believes about God’s character – that God is gracious and good.
  • Someone once said that faith is believing that God accepts me even though I am unacceptable.
  • David knows he is unacceptable and yet he has the faith to believe that God is generous enough to forgive him and accept him.

David doesn’t rely on his own good works to save him – he doesn’t say to God, ‘I’ve done a lot of good things for you and Israel over the years Lord. Remember what I did with Goliath. How about you let this slide.’

  • Rather, David relies on God’s steadfast love and mercy, God’s hesed.

David describes his wrong doing with the words: iniquity, transgressions & sin

  • They are essentially three ways of saying the same thing, although each word has a different nuance.
  • Iniquity is any act of injustice
  • Transgressions refers to the ways David has crossed the line of God’s law (in this case coveting, adultery, murder and lying)
  • While sin is more a state of being in which we act independently of God, as though God did not exist.

The word wash, as in ‘wash me thoroughly’ is the same word that is used for washing clothes

  • In David’s day, people got stains out of clothes by rubbing the fabric together or by beating the clothes on a rock
  • For David to ask God to ‘wash me thoroughly’ then, is to invite some rough treatment for his sin – David does not expect cheap grace.
  • God’s forgiveness of David did not mean David got off scot free.
  • In 2nd Samuel 12 the prophet Nathan tells David that, while he is forgiven, his child to Bathsheba will die and the sword will never depart from David’s house. God is merciful but he’s also just.  

From verse 3 we continue…

3 For I know my transgressions, and my sin is ever before me. 4 Against you, you alone, have I sinned, and done what is evil in your sight, so that you are justified in your sentence and blameless when you pass judgment. 5 Indeed, I was born guilty, a sinner when my mother conceived me.

These verses contain David’s confession. Often when we mess up in some way, our first instinct is to deny our wrong doing or make excuses or blame someone else. David does not do this. David admits he is wrong and God is right. No excuses.

At the beginning of verse 4 David says he has sinned against God alone, which jars with us a bit because clearly David’s iniquity has affected Uriah, Bathsheba, the nation of Israel, his family and himself as well.

  • I think David is using the word sinned in the sense of operating independently of God, behaving as though God did not exist.
  • The point is, sin is first and foremost an affront to God
  • So often we judge ourselves by the ethic of: “It’s okay as long as I don’t harm anyone else.”
  • But in saying that, we exclude God. We don’t consider God as a person
  • We forget how our actions affect the Lord. 
  • As offensive as David’s behaviour was to other human beings, it was even more offensive to God. 

Derek Kidner observes the change in David’s attitude here…[2]

  • Previously David’s only concern was, ‘How do I cover my tracks?’ How do I protect myself and my reputation?
  • Now David is more concerned with ‘How could I treat God like this?’      

David is not blaming his mother or his parents in verse 5, where he talks about being guilty even in the womb

  • No. David is saying the problem is with me. My character is deeply flawed. I have always been prone to sin. I am to blame.

From verse 6 we read…

  • 6 You desire truth in the inward being; therefore, teach me wisdom in my secret heart.
  • The problem is inside us. Sin starts with a lie, with stinking thinking.
  • We need God to teach us the wisdom of being honest with ourselves so we can think straight – then change will happen from the inside out.

Verse 7: 7 Purge me with hyssop, and I shall be clean; wash me, and I shall be whiter than snow.

  • When a priest declared a leper clean and fit to re-join the community they would dip the branch of a hyssop tree in sacrificial blood and sprinkle the person seven times. David is comparing himself to a leper.
  • Jesus’ blood, sprinkled on us, makes us clean.
  • The word purge is equivalent to ‘de-sin’ [3] – in other words, ‘remove from me any desire to be independent of you God’.

Verse 8: 8 Let me hear joy and gladness; let the bones that you have crushed rejoice. 9 Hide your face from my sins, and blot out all my iniquities.

  • The weight of David’s guilt is crushing him deep inside and, like broken bones, it is extremely painful, not to mention paralysing
  • He can’t enjoy anything because of his guilt.

And so we get to the verses we sing in church…

10 Create in me a clean heart, O God, and renew a right spirit within me.

The words create and renew go together. They refer to something only God can do. David is asking for a miracle of transformation, a deep conversion of himself from the inside out 

  • In the Genesis account of creation God brings order to the chaos, so that it becomes functional.
  • David wants God to bring order to the chaos of his heart – to renew the core of his being, as opposed to replacing it.

Over the past few months our car has been playing up. Not all the time, just randomly, sporadically. Sometimes, when we turned it on, it would start up for a few seconds and then the engine would die. Other times it ran fine.

  • I took it to the mechanic last week and he diagnosed that it was a faulty cam-belt sensor. The sensor thought there was a problem, when there wasn’t, and shut the engine down unnecessarily.
  • These days we fix a problem like a faulty sensor by throwing the old one away and putting a new one in, but this is not God’s preference.
  • Sometimes God replaces but more often He is inclined to use what is already there – to transform what is broken and make it functional again.
  • So create in me a clean heart does not mean throwing the old heart away and replacing it with a new one, like with the sensor in our car
  • Create in me a clean heart means transforming the old heart so that it functions in the way it should.

The words heart and spirit (as in the human spirit) go together

  • It’s difficult to tie these words down or define them exactly because they can be used in different ways depending on the context

Proverbs 4:23 tells us to guard our heart because it is the well-spring of life

  • The heart is to our soul what a water bore is to a farm.
  • The heart is to our life what roots are to a tree.   

Spirit can mean the breath that animates the body and makes it alive, but it can also refer to something that is not physical or material and yet still very real.

Spirit normally has to do with relationship though – as in the bond between God and people and what characterises that bond 

  • For example, a ‘spirit of fear’ describes a relationship based on fear.
  • Or we might say, someone has a ‘gentle spirit’, meaning they relate with others in a gentle way, as opposed to a rough or violent way
  • A right spirit is a relationship characterised by treating others right
  • A right spirit can also be translated as a ‘steady spirit’ or a ‘loyal spirit’. David doesn’t want to be inconsistent in his relationship with God or others – he wants to be steady and loyal and faithful.

We express our self (who we are) through our heart & spirit

  • Our heart and spirit characterise the condition and direction of our life [4]   
  • In praying for a clean heart and a right spirit David is acknowledging that the direction and condition of his life have gone haywire
  • David’s heart & spirit have expressed adultery and murder and he doesn’t want that to happen again
  • David wants his life to be open to God and directed toward His purpose.

My lawn at home has quite a few daisies and butter cups in it. As much as I like mowing lawns I’m reluctant to cut the flower heads off.

  • During the day the daisies and buttercups open up to face the sun.
  • They direct themselves toward the light and in doing so they express the beauty of their heart and spirit. But then at night they close up again.
  • We human beings are a bit like flowers. In the same way a flower expresses its beauty by opening its petals to the sunlight, so too we express our beauty as we direct our lives toward God and open our heart to His light (the light of Christ).

Verse 11: 11 Do not cast me away from your presence, and do not take your holy spirit from me.

  • God’s presence and God’s Holy Spirit go together – God is present through His Spirit.
  • Today the children in the Flock Sunday school are learning how Samuel anointed David to be king of Israel
  • When king Saul disobeyed God, the Lord took His Spirit away from Saul and gave it to David
  • The anointing of God’s Spirit gave David both the power and authority to rule as king of Israel – God’s Spirit made David royalty. God’s Spirit makes us royalty too.
  • Perhaps David is worried that God will take away his kingly authority, like he did with Saul.
  • More likely though David doesn’t want to lose the intimacy he enjoys with God through the Holy Spirit. 
  • The application for us here is that we can’t presume upon God’s grace.
  • God’s Spirit is a gift, freely given. But God can and will take His Spirit back if we abuse our power or position without remorse.

God’s presence may also be a reference to the temple in Jerusalem – the temple being a symbol of God’s presence

  • This psalm would have been particularly poignant for the Israelites in exile in Babylon (a few hundred years after David).
  • They knew what it was to be cast away from God’s presence and longed to return to Jerusalem to rebuild the temple.
  • The body of Christ, the church, is the new temple of God’s presence
  • When we sing this line we aren’t just asking for some personal mystical experience of God’s Spirit – we are asking to remain in Christ as part of His body the church. 
  • We are saying, ‘Don’t excommunicate me Lord. Let me enjoy communion with you and your people.’

Verse12: 12 Restore to me the joy of your salvation, and sustain in me a willing spirit.

  • Joy is a positive energy – it sustains our spirit. David had no joy.
  • People may lack joy for a whole lot of reasons, often through no fault of their own. But, in David’s case, it was because of what he had done wrong, because of his guilt.
  • God’s salvation for David, in this situation, means God’s forgiveness
  • David has killed an innocent man and therefore he deserves to die
  • Salvation would mean having his life spared
  • Salvation would also mean a clear conscience.
  • David wants to be free of his guilt so he has the energy he needs to willingly do what God wants.
  • A willing spirit can also be translated a princely spirit, as in a noble spirit.

Verse 13: 13 Then I will teach transgressors your ways, and sinners will return to you.

  • I don’t think David is intending to preach to people here. I think he means his example will be a sermon to others.
  • When people see how God has saved David, they will repent. They will think, if God can forgive David’s sin, then he can forgive mine too.
  • Indeed, David’s example of honest (excuse free confession) and deep heart felt repentance has provided hope for forgiveness and a pathway to redemption for millions of people down the centuries.

The rest of the psalm then talks about worship…

14 Deliver me from bloodshed, O God, O God of my salvation, and my tongue will sing aloud of your deliverance. 15 O Lord, open my lips, and my mouth will declare your praise. 16 For you have no delight in sacrifice; if I were to give a burnt offering, you would not be pleased. 17 The sacrifice acceptable to God is a broken spirit; a broken and contrite heart, O God, you will not despise. 18 Do good to Zion in your good pleasure; rebuild the walls of Jerusalem, 19 then you will delight in right sacrifices, in burnt offerings and whole burnt offerings; then bulls will be offered on your altar.

For our worship to be acceptable it must come from a broken spirit and a contrite heart – from the inside out

  • ‘God is looking for the heart that knows how little it deserves and how much it owes’ [5]
  • Our humility is beautiful to God, like an open daisy or a buttercup

Conclusion:

I’m not sure why Keith Green chose to do a cover of Create in me a clean heart

  • Perhaps it was because he identified with David in being a prodigal son who had returned to God his heavenly Father
  • Or maybe it was to irritate the church’s conscience – a kind of call for God’s people to live holy lives and not take God’s salvation for granted.
  • Keith longed for deep conversion for himself and others.

Like Keith Green, king David had been forgiven much and so he loved much

  • Worship is an expression of our love for God
  • Psalm 51 begins with confession and ends in worship
  • Before we can worship God properly we have to realise how much we have been forgiven
  • And before we can realise how much we have been forgiven we have to face the truth about ourselves, we have to feel the depth of our sin and make our confession.

Let us pray…  

Create in me a clean heart, O God,

And renew a right spirit within me;

Cast me not away from Your presence, O Lord

Take not Your Holy Spirit from me;

Restore unto me the joy of Your salvation,

And renew a right spirit within me.

Through Jesus we pray. Amen.

The Weaned Soul

Scripture: Psalm 131

Title: The weaned soul

Structure:

  • Introduction
  • Humility of heart

Introduction:

On the wall here we have three pictures

–         We have Doctor Who’s ‘Tardis’

–         The Wardrobe from the ‘Lion the Witch and the Wardrobe’

–         And the suitcase from ‘Fantastic Beasts and where to find them’

 

Who can tell me what these three things share in common?  [Wait]

–         That’s right – they are all a lot bigger on the inside than they appear on the outside and they transport you to a different world

 

This morning we return to our series on the Songs of Ascents

–         These songs were probably sung by Jewish pilgrims as they made their way to the temple in Jerusalem

–         They are songs about drawing nearer to God

 

Our focus today is psalm 131

–         While this song appears quite small from the outside (only three verses long) – it is actually very spacious on the inside

–         Psalm 131 is like a gateway into a whole different realm

–         In this song the author, King David, touches on some pretty deep themes including humility of the heart, contentment of the soul and hope for the nation. From the New Revised Standard Version we read…

 

O Lord, my heart is not lifted up,     my eyes are not raised too high; I do not occupy myself with things     too great and too marvellous for me.

But I have calmed and quieted my soul,     like a weaned child with its mother;     my soul is like the weaned child that is with me.

O Israel, hope in the Lord     from this time on and forevermore.

 

May the Spirit of Jesus illuminate this reading for us

 

Humility:

I have in my hand a spirit level

–         This is a builder’s tool which shows whether something is level or not

–         If the floor or the wall or whatever it is you are measuring is straight and true then the bubble here will sit nicely between the two lines

–         But if it’s on an angle (if one part is lifted up or standing too proud) then the bubble will move outside the lines [1]

 

David begins psalm 131 by talking to the Lord about humility. He says…

–         O Lord, my heart is not lifted up, my eyes are not raised too high…

–         David is saying here that he is not proud – he is humble

 

Some people think that humility consists of being self-deprecating or having a low self-esteem or putting yourself down. It doesn’t.

–         Humility is about having a true and accurate estimation of yourself in relation to God and others

–         The person who is truly humble doesn’t think too highly of themselves nor too lowly of themselves – they are level headed in their perception

–         To be humble then is to be on the level, straight, true and honest

 

Now you might be thinking – isn’t David boasting when he says he’s not proud, doesn’t that undo his humility? (humility is a sort of a Catch 22 like that)

–         Well no. David isn’t boasting, he is simply stating the facts

–         He has got his spirit level out and everything is straight & true – nothing is lifted too high or sitting too proud

 

David says that his heart is not lifted up

–         What does he mean by his ‘heart’?

 

Contemporary western society tends to equate the heart to a person’s feelings or emotions

–         In the Bible though, the heart isn’t limited to a person’s feelings

–         Rather the heart is the seat of the will

–         In other words, the heart is where decisions are made

–         This means, what we say and do comes from the heart

–         Our personal values, the things that are important to us, the principles we live by all reside in the heart

–         The human heart is sort of like the parliament of the individual

–         The heart governs a person’s life

 

You sometimes hear people talking about ‘inviting Jesus into your heart’

–         What does that mean?

–         It means to let Jesus sit on the throne of your life,

–         Let him be Lord, let him be Prime Minister,

–         Give him executive authority, make Jesus your power of attorney

–         Let Christ inform and guide the decisions you make

 

When David says to the Lord, my heart is not lifted up (or not proud) he means something like: I don’t make decisions without you God

–         I am not wilfully disobedient

–         I don’t think that I know better than you Lord

–         I submit my will to your will

–         I give you, O God, power of attorney over my life

 

Now at this point some of you, who know David’s story, might be thinking…

–         ‘Really? Is that right David? What about Uriah and Bathsheba? How did God feature in those decisions?’

–         And that’s a fair point – David wasn’t perfect.

–         We don’t know exactly when David wrote psalm 131

–         It could have been before the debacle with Uriah and Bathsheba or it might have been after that, when David had repented

–         We can be fairly confident he didn’t write it during that time

 

In any case we are told that David was a man after God’s own heart

–         Meaning that, generally speaking, David pursued God’s will

–         He went after what God wanted in most situations

 

Returning to verse 1 – David goes on to say to the Lord:

–         …my eyes are not raised too high

–         If a person’s heart is where decisions come from then a person’s eyes relate to perception

–         It’s like David is saying: I don’t look down on others

–         I don’t think of myself as better than other people

–         I don’t even compare myself to them

–         And I don’t see my desires as being more important than anyone else’s

 

Sometimes we can be bitterly disappointed when we don’t get what we want, especially if someone else does get what we want

–         That’s my seat, I always sit there

–         I was looking forward to that last piece of cake and someone beat me to it

–         I really wanted to be selected for the Lion’s tour of NZ but Warren Gatling didn’t pick me

–         Or, I wanted to sleep in but the kids woke me up early

–         These are frivolous examples of course but you get the point:

–         The truly humble person knows that it’s not realistic to expect to always get what you want

–         Humility is the awareness that we are not the centre of the universe – the world doesn’t revolve around us

 

The second half of verse 1 continues this theme of humility

–         I do not occupy myself with things too great and too marvellous for me.

 

Here David appears to be saying, I accept my limits – in particular the limits of my understanding and the limits of my ability

–         Humility means accepting that we don’t know everything and learning to live with mystery, which can be more difficult for some than others

 

Science is able to explain many things about the physical universe but not everything

–         In 1953 Albert Einstein wrote a letter in response to one of his critics

–         In the letter he says…

 

“Dear Mr. Moffat, our situation is the following. We are standing in front of a closed box which we cannot open, and we try hard to discover what is and is not in it.” [2] (The closed box Einstein was referring to is the universe)

 

Which came first? The chicken or the egg?

–         What happens to something when it enters a black hole in space?

–         Who built Stonehenge?

–         Is there intelligent life on other planets?

 

We could go on but I don’t mean to side track your thinking or occupy your mind with things too great and marvellous

–         If we are this limited in our understanding of the physical universe how much more limited are we when it comes to understanding God?

–         Humility means accepting the limits of what we know and learning to live with mystery

 

Humility of heart is perhaps the most important of all the virtues

–         It’s a bit like the soil out of which the other virtues grow

–         Like the virtue of contentment – which we read about in verse 2…

 

Contentment:

But [instead of occupying my time and thoughts with things too great and marvellous for me – instead of comparing myself with others and instead of lifting what I want above what God wants]

–         I have calmed and quieted my soul, like a weaned child with its mother; my soul is like the weaned child that is with me.

 

David has talked about the heart, the eyes and the mind

–         Now he talks about his soul

–         What is the human soul?

 

Well, describing the soul is like putting together a jigsaw puzzle – you can’t really define the soul in one pithy sentence or reduce it to a formula

–         The best we can do is describe the soul in pieces and then admit that we don’t have all the pieces – there are limits to our understanding here

 

The soul is different from the heart and the spirit

–         The heart is where values are held and decisions are made – like the parliament of the individual

–         And the human spirit is our capacity to connect or relate with God and others – sort of like wifi or cell-phone coverage

–         While our soul is the life force which animates us and connects the various aspects of our self

 

If the term ‘life force’ is too Star Wars sounding for you then you might prefer Dallas Willard’s metaphor, where he compares the soul to an inner stream, which refreshes, nourishes and gives strength to every other element of our life [3]

–         Just as a river gives life to the land it passes through, so too our soul gives life to our body, our mind, our heart and our spirit

–         Normally we can see a river or a stream but the stream of our soul is underground, it is hidden deep beneath the surface

–         In fact the soul is the deepest level of life and power in the human being

 

Expanding on Dallas’ metaphor we could say that if the soul is a stream of water, then God is the source (or the well-spring) of the soul

–         While the human spirit is the channel (or the conduit) through which the water of our soul flows

 

The thing that convinces me most that we have a soul is death

–         Whenever I see a dead body it’s obvious to me that the soul has departed

–         Looking at a corpse is quite different from looking at someone sleeping

–         Death has a certain pallor – a kind of greyness

–         A dead body is missing something more than just a heart beat

–         It’s missing the soul – it’s missing the stream of its life force

 

Returning to psalm 131 – David says he has calmed and quieted his soul

–         What does it mean then to quieten your soul?

–         Well, sitting still in silence, is a helpful start but it’s not usually enough by itself – our mind can be racing even if our tongue is still

–         We quieten our soul by abandoning outcomes to God

–         By not seeking to manipulate the end result

–         Not seeking to make ourselves look good in the eyes of others

–         Not seeking success or fame or superiority

–         Embracing the truth that we (on our own) don’t have the resources to make things turn out right

–         The soul settles down and finds its level when we let go of our reputation and simply trust God with the outcome

 

Dallas Willard compares the soul to an inner stream

–         Like any metaphor though it has its limits, it’s just one piece to the puzzle

–         King David provides another piece, comparing his soul to a weaned child with its mother – The poetry in this verse is profound

 

To say the soul is like a child indicates that the soul is not static or fixed but is dynamic, changing and growing, developing and learning

–         Furthermore it seems David is implying that God is the mother of his soul

–         We normally hear God described as a Father but sometimes the Bible associates God with motherhood

–         This is entirely appropriate – God cannot be contained by our narrow human categories

–         In any case, David appears to be saying that his soul feels a close bond with God – like a mother and child

 

The aspect that is underlined most strongly though is that David’s soul is like a weaned child

–         (He says ‘weaned child’ twice, which is significant in such a short poem)

–         To be weaned is to become accustomed to managing without something which we were previously dependent on

–         In the case of a mother and a baby, the child becomes accustomed to food other than it’s mother’s milk

–         So the child stops drinking its mother’s milk and starts eating solid food

–         It’s not that milk is bad – it is good for a time – but as the child grows it needs more substantial nourishment

 

A baby cries when it is hungry so the mother will feed it

–         A weaned child doesn’t cry though – a weaned child knows it will be fed and waits for mum to prepare the meal

 

How does God feed the soul?

–         God feeds the soul with meaning

–         When something is meaningful it is worthwhile – it has a point to it, a purpose that is satisfying

–         Meaning answers the ‘why’ questions of life & death

–         We often find meaning in stories – that’s why the Bible is full of stories – they feed our soul, they help us to make sense of our lives and our losses

 

Ultimately God is the one who gives meaning to our lives

–         The thing is, we often have to wait for that meaning to be revealed

 

Abraham couldn’t see the meaning of his wealth when he had no children to pass it on to – he waited many years for God to fulfil his promise

–         But his wait was not in vain

 

I imagine Joseph struggled to see the meaning of his life when he was sold into slavery by his brothers and then later sent to prison for a crime he didn’t commit

–         But God used Joseph to save millions from starvation

 

Moses probably didn’t see much meaning in his life as a shepherd caring for sheep in the desert for 40 years, especially after being raised in a palace

–         But God used Moses to save the Israelites from slavery

 

The disciples struggled to see the meaning in Jesus’ death on the cross

–         At the time it may have seemed to them like they had wasted the last 3 years of their lives

–         Little did they know the cross was part of God’s plan to redeem creation

 

You may be finding it hard to locate the meaning in your life at the moment

–         Perhaps your job seems pointless or maybe you don’t have a job

–         Perhaps you were once very involved in church work or missions but now you feel like God has forgotten you

–         Maybe you have suffered a terrible loss and the grief is overwhelming

–         Hang in there – you never know when God will reveal the meaning

 

John of the Cross was a 16th Century Carmelite monk who didn’t really understand the meaning of his life’s work at the time

–         Through his thinking and writing John was among those who tried to lead a reform of the Catholic church during the 1500’s

–         John was arrested by those he was trying to help and during his confinement he wrote what became a classic, The Dark Night of the Soul

–         I don’t expect he ever imagined God would use his writing to help millions in the centuries that followed

 

Let me read you some excerpts from his book – John speaks directly to this process of God weaning the Christian soul…

 

After a soul has been converted by God, that soul is nurtured and caressed by the [Holy] Spirit. Like a loving mother, God cares for and comforts the infant soul by feeding it spiritual milk. Such souls will find great delight in this stage. They will begin praying with great urgency and perseverance; they will engage in all kinds of religious activities because of the joy they experience in them.

But there will come a time when God will bid them to grow deeper. He will remove the previous consolation from the soul in order to teach it virtue and prevent it from developing vice…

They will enter the dark night of the soul and find all of these things removed. They will have the pleasure taken away so that the soul may be purified. For a soul will never grow until it is able to let go of the tight grasp it has on God…

When their delight [in spiritual milk] comes to an end, these persons are very anxious and frustrated just as an infant is angry when it is taken away from its mother’s breast…

Let it suffice to say, then, that God perceives the imperfections within us, and because of his love for us, urges us to grow up. His love is not content to leave us in our weakness, and for this reason he takes us into a dark night. He weans us from all of the pleasures by giving us dry times and inward darkness. [4]   

 

David’s soul had been feeding on spiritual milk – but God weaned him off milk in order to help David grow up (spiritually)

–         David’s soul had been through the dark night – a time of disorientation and dryness where his usual devotional routines (like writing and singing worship songs for example) had lost all their pleasure

–         But now the dark night has done its work and David’s soul is content

–         He doesn’t cry out to God every time something doesn’t go his way

–         His prayer time isn’t a long shopping list detailing all his needs & wants or worries & fears

–         He knows that God understands his needs and he trusts God to provide

–         David has abandoned the outcome to God

–         His soul has found contentment with the Lord

 

Now some of you will have been through the weaning process we call the dark night of the soul and you will know exactly what David and John of the Cross are talking about

–         Others of you wouldn’t have faced the dark night yet – that’s okay

–         If you haven’t faced the dark night, know that it’s coming

–         And when it does come – don’t panic

–         Be calm, be still, quieten your soul – abandon the outcome to God

–         When your soul is being weaned by God you may feel like you are losing your faith – you’re not

 

Hang on through the dark night – God is bringing you to the next stage of faith in him, where you will be less anxious to know all the answers and better able to accept His will, even when His will is unpleasant or delays your satisfaction

 

Conclusion – Hope:

David finishes his song by addressing the nation…

–         O Israel, hope in the Lord from this time on and forevermore.

 

Hope has to do with believing something good is coming in the future

–         Hope is a form of meaning more substantial than milk

–         The bread of hope feeds our soul in the present

–         Hope sustains our soul with joy and energy

 

God has weaned David off spiritual milk and is now feeding him the bread of hope – David (the king) wants to share this bread of hope with his people

 

We are currently in the season of Easter, as we wait for Pentecost

–         For Jesus’ first disciples Easter was a time of weaning

–         There was Easter Saturday of course when Jesus was dead and the disciples were confused and grief stricken

–         (A very acute dose of the dark night of the soul)

–         But the time between Jesus’ resurrection and Pentecost was also a time of weaning

–         Previously the disciples had access to Jesus 24-7

–         He was present with them physically all the time – like a mother with a small child

–         But after Jesus’ resurrection and ascension the disciples’ way of relating with Jesus had to change

–         Jesus was no longer present with them physically

–         The disciples had to go through this weaning process in order to grow up in the faith

 

Jesus didn’t abandon them altogether though

–         Jesus gave them the gift of the Holy Spirit and the bread of hope

–         He promised them he would return one day in glory to make all things right – this is our hope too
