Introduction:

Good morning everyone.

There is a lovely line on the opening page of Kenneth Grahame’s book, The Wind in the Willows, which reads…

“Spring was moving in the air above and in the earth below and around him, penetrating even his dark and lowly little house, with its spirit of divine discontent and longing.”

I like the way Kenneth Grahame puts that. Springtime does carry a spirit of divine discontent and longing. Discontent with the winter and longing for the summer.  

Divine discontent is a kind of holy dissatisfaction with the way things are. We experience divine discontent when we are not living according to the deepest longing of our soul.

In The Wind in the Willows, Mole has been doing his spring cleaning and can’t stand it any longer. He must go above ground and roll in the grass and warm sunshine. Spring answers his longing for winter to end and summer to begin.

Today we continue our sermon series in the life of Joseph focusing on Genesis chapter 43, verses 15 to 34. In this passage we see the deep longing of Joseph and his brothers rising to the surface. From verse 15 of Genesis 43 we read…

15 So the men took the gifts and double the amount of silver, and Benjamin also. They hurried down to Egypt and presented themselves to Joseph. 16 When Joseph saw Benjamin with them, he said to the steward of his house, “Take these men to my house, slaughter an animal and prepare dinner; they are to eat with me at noon.” 17 The man did as Joseph told him and took the men to Joseph’s house. 18 Now the men were frightened when they were taken to his house. They thought, “We were brought here because of the silver that was put back into our sacks the first time. He wants to attack us and overpower us and seize us as slaves and take our donkeys.” 19 So they went up to Joseph’s steward and spoke to him at the entrance to the house. 20 “Please, sir,” they said, “we came down here the first time to buy food. 21 But at the place where we stopped for the night we opened our sacks and each of us found his silver—the exact weight—in the mouth of his sack. So we have brought it back with us. 22 We have also brought additional silver with us to buy food. We don’t know who put our silver in our sacks.” 23 “It’s all right,” he said. “Don’t be afraid. Your God, the God of your father, has given you treasure in your sacks; I received your silver.” Then he brought Simeon out to them. 24 The steward took the men into Joseph’s house, gave them water to wash their feet and provided fodder for their donkeys. 25 They prepared their gifts for Joseph’s arrival at noon, because they had heard that they were to eat there. 26 When Joseph came home, they presented to him the gifts they had brought into the house, and they bowed down before him to the ground. 27 He asked them how they were, and then he said, “How is your aged father you told me about? Is he still living?”  28 They replied, “Your servant our father is still alive and well.” And they bowed low to pay him honor.  29 As he looked about and saw his brother Benjamin, his own mother’s son, he asked, “Is this your youngest brother, the one you told me about?” And he said, “God be gracious to you, my son.” 30 Deeply moved at the sight of his brother, Joseph hurried out and looked for a place to weep. He went into his private room and wept there. 31 After he had washed his face, he came out and, controlling himself, said, “Serve the food.” 32 They served him by himself, the brothers by themselves, and the Egyptians who ate with him by themselves, because Egyptians could not eat with Hebrews, for that is detestable to Egyptians. 33 The men had been seated before him in the order of their ages, from the firstborn to the youngest; and they looked at each other in astonishment. 34 When portions were served to them from Joseph’s table, Benjamin’s portion was five times as much as anyone else’s. So they feasted and drank freely with him.

May the Spirit of Jesus illuminate God’s word for us.

The brothers’ longing:

David Augsburger, the late Anabaptist theologian, once wrote…

“Ontologically, chocolate raises profoundly disturbing questions: Does not chocolate offer natural revelation of the goodness of the Creator just as chilies disclose a divine sense of humour? Is the human born with an innate longing for chocolate? Does the notion of chocolate preclude the concept of freewill?”  

As a chocolate lover this quote makes me smile. It’s not often you find a theologian with a sense of humour. David is basically saying that chocolate is hard proof that God exists and God is good.

The reality is, we human beings have many desires and longings which often seem to compete for our attention. Some of those desires we might judge as wrong or evil and others as virtuous or good.

For example, we might judge eating chocolate as bad. I don’t think that, but some people carry a great deal of misplaced guilt about chocolate. Whether you deem chocolate to be good or evil, you have to ask yourself, what deeper longing is my desire for chocolate pointing to?

The very fact that many people love chocolate shows that human beings have a deep longing for God. For if we long for the goodness of chocolate, it logically follows our longing can only be satisfied through a right relationship with the one who made us to enjoy chocolate.

Or, to put it another way, it doesn’t matter how much chocolate you eat, your longing will never be fully satisfied except through an encounter with the living God.

Back, in Genesis 37, you may recall how Joseph’s brothers plotted to get rid of Joseph. They hated Joseph because he was Jacob’s favourite.

The brothers’ desire to kill Joseph was not good in itself but we have to ask ourselves, why did they want to do that? What deeper longing was driving their desire to destroy Joseph? 

Maybe it was the desire to be loved. Maybe, on some level, they thought if we get rid of Joseph, then our Dad will have more love for us. But that is not how love works. Love multiplies with giving. Love does not grow by taking. When the brothers sold Joseph into slavery, they only reduced their father’s capacity for love.

Perhaps the greatest impediment to love is fear. And Joseph’s brothers know all about fear. They have lived with it for over twenty years. In Genesis 43 verse 18 we read…

Now the men were frightened when they were taken to his house. They thought, “We were brought here because of the silver that was put back into our sacks the first time. He wants to attack us and overpower us and seize us as slaves and take our donkeys.”

It’s amazing how fear can distort our thinking. Fear tends to disconnect us from our deepest longings. It makes our thinking smaller somehow, so that all we can imagine is our own harm.   

Why would someone as rich and powerful as the Prime Minister of Egypt be interested in their scrawny donkeys? Surely the ruler of the land has bigger fish to fry.

Moved by a longing for peace of mind, the brothers front up to the steward of Joseph’s house and tell him the truth. We did not steal the silver last time we were here. Somehow it ended up back in our sacks. We don’t know how. Here it is. And the Joseph’s servant says in reply… 

“It’s all right, don’t be afraid. Your God, the God of your father, has given you treasure in your sacks; I received your silver.”

The steward’s opening phrase, “It’s all right”, is just one word in the original Hebrew. Shalom. Shalom means peace, wholeness and well-being in all aspects of your life, especially your relationships.

The brothers are afraid. They long for peace and the steward answers that longing saying, God has given you treasure in your sacks.

One of the deepest longings of the human soul, is the longing to know that God is with us and for us, that he loves us. Joseph’s brothers did not believe that God was with them. They thought God was against them because of what they did to Joseph. They thought God was out to get them. They had been looking over their shoulder in fear for decades.

The brothers have become so alienated by their guilt that they don’t really believe the God of their father Jacob, is also their God. But their wrongdoing does not stop God from being God. The God of their father is still their God.

It’s the same with us. Our moral failure does not stop God being God. Our straying off track and getting lost, in a spiritual sense, does not prevent God from pursuing us with his love. Nor does it derail God’s purpose.

When the steward says, God has given you treasure in your sacks, he is not just talking about silver. The silver is a metaphor for something far more valuable than mere money.

It’s like the steward is saying, God has put treasure in the sack of your soul. The treasure is in you and in your relationships. And the treasure is God’s grace.   

Joseph was Jacob’s favourite. Perhaps that made the other brothers feel less valuable, less loveable, in some way. But they are not less to God. The brothers have divine treasure in them as well, even if Jacob, their earthly father, does not see it or acknowledge it.  

The message to the brothers and to us is clear. No matter how worthless you might feel (because of what you have done or what has been done to you), you are intrinsically valuable because God has made you that way.

Like the apostle Paul says in his letter to the Corinthians…

But we have this treasure in jars of clay to show that this all-surpassing power is from God and not from us.

It is not your looks or your charm or your achievements or your reputation or your bank balance or anything you do that make you rich. You are rich because you are loved by God. The treasure is in you.

Okay, so Joseph’s brothers had some deep longings. Longings for peace and love. Longings that could only really be satisfied by God. What about Joseph himself, what did he long for?  

Joseph’s longing:

John Ortberg (another Christian author) says this about longing…

“The human longings that are deep inside of us never go away. They exist across cultures; they exist throughout life. When people were first made, our deepest longing was to know and be known. And after the Fall, when we all got weird, it’s still our deepest longing – but it’s now also our deepest fear.”

What John Ortberg is talking about here is intimacy. To know another human being deeply and to be known and accepted by them in turn, is the definition of intimacy. Into me see.

Each of us has a deep longing for intimacy. The desire for physical intimacy points to a deeper longing for emotional intimacy. Intimacy of soul, mind and spirit. A genuine sharing of oneself with another.

Sadly, fear gets in the way of developing intimacy. We get hurt in this life and our hurt makes it harder to risk making ourselves vulnerable. If fear is left unchecked it shuts us down and closes us off from knowing others and revealing our true selves. What if others don’t like who I am.

The longing for intimacy runs deep in all of us but some are more in touch with their longing than others. Certainly, Joseph longed for intimacy. He wanted to know his brothers and he wanted them to know him. The question was, could he trust them or not.

We see something of Joseph’s desire for intimacy in the way he asks after his brothers and father in verse 27…

27 He asked them how they were [shalom], and then he said, “How is [shalom] your aged father you told me about? Is he still living?”

Twice more the Hebrew word shalom pops up, this time on the lips of Joseph. In asking after his brothers and father, Joseph is actually inquiring after their shalom, their wellbeing, their peace.

This is more than a simple, ‘How’s it going’. Joseph genuinely wants to know his family is okay. He cares about them. He loves them.

Notice also how verse 27 is framed. In verses 26 and 28, all eleven brothers bow down to honour Joseph. They don’t know it’s Joseph at this point but we, the readers, can see that Joseph’s dream all those years before (of his brothers bowing to him) is being fulfilled.

The interesting thing here is that Joseph does not care about his brothers’ bowing and scrapping. He cares about them and their shalom, their wellbeing. What Joseph really wants (and always wanted probably) is a lifegiving connection with his brothers. Joseph longs for intimacy.

Being Jacob’s favourite had isolated Joseph. It alienated him from his brothers. They hated him for it. Joseph longs for warmth, belonging, acceptance and understanding from his brothers. Most of all though, Joseph longs for his brother Benjamin.

When Joseph sees Benjamin, his only full-blooded brother, he gives Ben a blessing saying, God be gracious to you, my son.  In the Hebrew culture of the time this was no small thing. This blessing carried real weight. It had gravity. But it is also full of affection.

Rather tellingly, in verse 30, we read how Joseph was deeply moved at the sight of his brother Benjamin. Joseph is moved to tears in fact and must run out of the room to compose himself.

Has that ever happened to you? Have you been ambushed by tears in the same way? Quietly going about your day only to be triggered by a familiar sight or smell that somehow puts you in touch with a deeper longing.  

Our spiritual life (to use Ignatian language) is characterized by times of desolation, times of consolation and times of normality.

In times of desolation, we feel like God is absent and our lives seem empty but also heavy at the same time. My God, my God, why have you forsaken me? Joseph certainly had his times of desolation.

But then come the times of consolation, when we feel God’s presence so close and tender. In those moments of intimacy with God, something shifts inside us and we may be moved to tears. It is difficult to know whether the tears are releasing pain or joy or both.

We only know we don’t want the consolation to end. But we cannot control it. Consolation is visited on us by God’s grace. All we can do is make space for it. Treasure it for the gift that it is. And remember it, especially in the times when feelings of desolation return.    

Joseph’s tears bear a close resemblance to the tears of consolation. He is so in touch with his deep longing for intimacy that he can feel God’s presence and it undoes him in the best way possible.     

Genesis 43 finishes with the brothers feasting and drinking freely with Joseph and each other. Even though Joseph has shown favouritism to Benjamin, by giving him five times as much food as anyone else, there is no hint of envy or resentment.

This is a picture of shalom, the kind of peace which makes room for intimacy. The kind of easy companionship they had all been longing for.

Conclusion:

A few days ago, I felt like eating some vanilla wine biscuits. It happens every once and a while. It wasn’t so much that I was physically hungry. I had chocolate biscuits in the cupboard, but strangely I didn’t feel like chocolate biscuits that day.

I put it down to missing my grandparents. You see, when I was kid, my nana and pop would give me vanilla wines, alongside home baking, whenever I went to visit. My hankering for vanilla wines was really a longing for them in a way. 

What do you long for?

Most of the time we are too busy, too pressured or too focused on a screen to be in touch with our inner longings. If that’s you, then perhaps a better question to ask might be, what’s your vanilla wine?

What simple, ordinary thing do you hunger for? What movie do you keep watching again and again? What place do you daydream about when life feels soulless and draining? What memory do you keep on repeat? What comfort food do you find sanctuary in?

Those seemingly superficial desires may be pointing to a deeper longing within you. Be gentle with your longing. Don’t judge or condemn it.    

When I think about it, my longing for my grandparents is really a holy discontent with death. Deep down we each have a yearning for resurrection. We want the springtime of abundant life to prevail over the winter of loss. We long for the summer of God’s kingdom to come on earth as it is in heaven.

God understands that about us. God knows our longing, which is why he sent Jesus. In and through Christ, our deepest human longings are fulfilled. What do you long for?

The heart of prayer is longing. Perhaps longing for wholeness. Longing for atonement. Longing for peace. Longing for redemption. Longing for intimacy. Longing for love. Longing for resurrection life. Longing for God.

When the apostle Paul says, pray without ceasing, he doesn’t mean, talk to God non-stop. He means, be honest about your longings. Stay in touch with what really matters to you because that is where you will find God’s purpose. That is where God will answer the longing of your soul with his presence.

May the Lord give you the desires of your heart. Amen.

Choose Life

Introduction:

Good morning everyone.

In the 1970’s there was a game show on TV called “It’s in the Bag”. Can anyone remember the name of the host? [Wait] That’s right, Selwyn Toogood, not to be confused with Jon Toogood, the lead singer of Shihad.

It’s in the Bag contestants got to choose between the money or the bag. They knew how much money they would get but they didn’t know what was in the bag. The bag might contain a TV or a pencil, a trip to Fiji or a paper clip, so it was a bit of a risk. The audience loved it when a contestant chose the bag.

Today we conclude our series in Deuteronomy by focusing on chapter 30, verses 15-20. We haven’t covered everything in Deuteronomy but given we started this series in May and Christmas is now upon us, it seems like a good time to finish.

In today’s reading, Moses asks the people of Israel to make a choice. Not the money or the bag, but rather life or death. Unlike the contestants in the game show, the Israelites knew exactly what they would get with either choice. From verse 15 of Deuteronomy 30 we read… 

15 See, I set before you today life and prosperity, death and destruction. 16 For I command you today to love the Lord your God, to walk in obedience to him, and to keep his commands, decrees and laws; then you will live and increase, and the Lord your God will bless you in the land you are entering to possess.

17 But if your heart turns away and you are not obedient, and if you are drawn away to bow down to other gods and worship them, 18 I declare to you this day that you will certainly be destroyed. You will not live long in the land you are crossing the Jordan to enter and possess. 19 This day I call the heavens and the earth as witnesses against you that I have set before you life and death, blessings and curses. Now choose life, so that you and your children may live 20 and that you may love the Lord your God, listen to his voice, and hold fast to him. For the Lord is your life, and he will give you many years in the land he swore to give to your fathers, Abraham, Isaac and Jacob.

May the Spirit of Jesus illuminate God’s word for us.

What is life?

In this reading Moses encourages the people to choose life. But what does Moses mean by life? Many people think of life in physical or material terms. So if you still have a pulse, if you are still breathing, then you have life. And while physical vitality is one aspect of life, there is more to it than that.

In verse 20 of Deuteronomy 30, Moses says: For the Lord God is your life. This tells us that life is more than just breathing and having a pulse. Life is essentially about our connection with God. In other words, the essence of life is right relationship with God, who is the one true source and giver of life.

We might think of it like this. The life of a light bulb is its connection to a power source. If we are the light bulb, then God is our power source. Our breath and our pulse, our hope and our joy, depend on God.

Or, if you think of a lake, then the life of a lake is its connection to the river which feeds the lake. If we are the lake, then God is one who provides rivers of grace and tributaries of truth to fill up our soul.

Or take a car as another example. The life of a car is its connection to the road. Without a road to drive on, the car is stuck and can’t fulfil its purpose.

If we are the car, then God enables us to fulfil our purpose. He provides the right road for us to take, as well as places to recharge or refuel along the way. For ancient Israel, the Law of Moses (summed up in the ten commandments) was the right road. For us today, Jesus is the way, the truth and the life.    

The life of a tree is its connection to the soil. The tree gets the water and nutrients it needs from the soil. If we are the tree, then God is the ground of our being, providing stability and all that our soul needs to grow and be fruitful.

The life of planet earth is its connection to the sun. The sun provides a centre of gravity around which the earth can orbit with regularity. The sun also provides just the right amount of light and warmth to sustain physical life on earth. If we are the earth, then Jesus is the sun whom our life revolves around and on whom our life depends. 

The life of a marriage is the couple’s connection to one another. The better the quality of the connection (the better the intimacy) between husband and wife, the healthier their marriage will be. The community of God’s people is the bride of Christ.    

The life of a baby is their connection with parents. A baby is completely dependent on their parents for survival. If we are the baby, then God is our Father and Mother, feeding, protecting and loving us. The Lord meets all our needs; physical, emotional and spiritual.   

This idea that life is connection with God is found right at the beginning of the Bible. In Genesis 2, the Lord God says to Adam & Eve: You are free to eat from any tree in the garden; but you must not eat from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, for when you eat it you will surely die.

Adam and Eve did eat the forbidden fruit but they did not die physically until many years later. Their heart kept beating for a long time. This shows us that life and death is not just a matter of breathing.

The death Adam & Eve experienced, after eating the fruit, was separation from God. They were cast out of the garden and survival became much harder. After losing their close connection to God, relationships suffered and before long the children of Adam & Eve were killing each other.

In John 15, Jesus tells the parable of the vine saying: I am the vine, you are the branches. Whoever remains in me will bear much fruit; for you can do nothing without me. This parable tells us quite plainly that life is connection with Jesus. We need Jesus like a branch needs the trunk of a tree.

You get the point. Life isn’t just about breathing or having a pulse. Life is connection with God. And this is good news because it means that life is not necessarily over when we stop breathing and our heart fails. If we are connected to God, through Jesus, then we will be raised to eternal life.

Eternal life is not primarily measured in units of time. Eternal life is more like a quality connection with God, intimacy with God, a relationship which sustains joy and vitality and abundant life forever.

Choosing Life:

Okay, given that life is connection with God, how do we choose life?

Sometimes we understand what something is by its opposite. In verses 17-18 of Deuteronomy 30, Moses paints a picture of what it looks like to choose death and destruction. He gives this warning…

17 But if your heart turns away and you are not obedient, and if you are drawn away to bow down to other gods and worship them, 18 I declare to you this day that you will certainly be destroyed. You will not live long in the land you are crossing the Jordan to enter and possess.

If idolatry and disobedience leads to death and destruction, then choosing life equates to keeping the Law of Moses. That is, following the ten commandments, the greatest of which is the command to love the Lord your God and stay loyal to him. 

When you are driving a car, you make choices all the time. How fast to drive, when to slow down and give way, when to pass, which lane you will drive in and so on. The road rules are there to help people make good choices so we can drive safely and reach our destination without incident.

If you think of your soul as a car, then the heart of your soul is like the driver of the car. The heart is where choices are made; how fast you will drive yourself, whether you will keep to your lane or take a wrong turn and come off the road.

God’s law is like the road rules. It is there to help us make good choices and keep our soul on the right path so we (and our neighbours) all reach our destination safely.

When we become a Christian we talk about giving our heart to Jesus. What we mean is asking Jesus to sit in the driver’s seat of our soul, letting Jesus have the wheel. Inviting his Spirit to guide our decisions so that we choose life.

Sadly, the Israelites disobeyed the rules God put in place to protect them. Their hearts turned away. They made choices to run after other gods and got off track. Eventually, after many centuries of Israel’s unfaithfulness, God allowed the Babylonians to destroy Jerusalem and carry the survivors into exile.  

Looking at it more positively, Moses offers three things that go hand in hand with choosing life and a connection with God. From verses 19 & 20 we read…

…Now choose life, so that you and your children may live 20 and that you may love the Lord your God, listen to his voice, and hold fast to him. For the Lord is your life…

Love, listen and hold fast to God; this is how we choose life. Not that these are three separate things. More like three different ways of saying the same thing.

Love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul and with all your strength. This is first and greatest commandment. Much of Deuteronomy is an exposition on this theme.

Listening to the Lord’s voice means paying attention to His word by obeying his Law and heeding his prophets. If you love God, you will listen to his voice and do what he says.

Love and obedience are two sides of the same coin, where God is concerned. In verse 16, Moses highlights the close relationship between love and obedience when he says: Love the Lord your God, walk in his ways and keep his commands, decrees and laws.

In his letter to the Romans, the apostle Paul talks about the obedience of faith. We are saved (we choose life) by putting our faith in Christ. And the fruit of faith, in Paul’s thinking, is obedience to the teachings of Jesus.       

Hold fast is about loyal commitment to Yahweh, in good times and bad. It’s about cleaving to God like a husband and wife cleave to each other.

As William Shakespeare famously wrote: Love is not love which alters when it alteration finds or bends with the remover to remove. O no! It is an ever-fixed mark that looks on tempests and is never shaken… Love alters not with his brief hours and weeks, but bears it out even to the edge of doom.

In other words, love holds fast, it does not change when the going gets tough. Love is loyal or it is not really love at all (like in Nicholas Sparks’ movie, The Notebook).  

One of my favourite parts of the Christmas story is when Joseph finds out that his fiancé Mary is pregnant with someone else’s baby. The law of Moses allowed Joseph to publicly humiliate Mary and even have her stoned.

But Joseph loved Mary and his love was true; it did not alter when it alteration finds. In other words, Joseph’s love for Mary did not change when he discovered Mary did not appear to love him. Joseph went beyond the letter of the law to find its spirit. In Matthew 1, verse 19 we read…

Because Joseph was a righteous man and did not want to expose Mary to public disgrace, he had in mind to divorce her quietly. 

By choosing this path of action, Joseph chose life for Mary. Little did Joseph realise that Mary was pregnant by the Holy Spirit. Once the angel told Joseph this in a dream, Joseph had the faith to believe and take Mary as his wife. Love believes all things.

Love, listen and hold fast to the Lord your God; this is how we choose life for ourselves and for others. Joseph loved God and Mary. He listened to God’s message through the angel and he obeyed, holding fast to Mary. 

Joseph’s loyal love for Mary stands as a pattern for us and illustrates what Jesus meant when he said: Whoever finds his life will lose it and whoever loses his life for my sake will find it.  

Sometimes choosing life requires us to make a difficult choice. Obedience to God is not always pleasant or easy. This is where faith is tested. For Jesus, choosing life (paradoxically) meant submitting to death on a cross. But God honoured Jesus’ loving obedience by raising his Son from the dead.

Conclusion:

What difficult choices are you facing this Christmas? What does choosing life look like for you?

Let us pray…

Father God, we thank you for Jesus, through whom we can choose life with you. Give us the grace to love, listen and hold fast to Jesus, in good times and bad. Help us to go the distance in your will and for your glory. Amen.

Psalm 16

Introduction:

Good morning everyone.

Last Sunday we played some Scrabble. This week I thought we could have a game of Snowman. Snowman is a spelling game usually played with kids, so I hope there are some children listening today.

Kids, the idea is for you to correctly spell the word I’m thinking of before I can draw a snowman. Throughout this message I will give you a number of clues. The first clue is that this word has four letters.

Last week we heard about Psalm 46. Today our focus is Psalm 16. This is a psalm of David. From verse 1 we read…   

Protect me, O God, for in you I take refuge. I say to the Lord, “You are my Lord; I have no good apart from you.” As for the holy ones in the land, they are the noble, in whom is all my delight. Those who choose another god multiply their sorrows; their drink offerings of blood I will not pour out or take their names upon my lips.

The Lord is my chosen portion and my cup; you hold my lot. The boundary lines have fallen for me in pleasant places; I have a goodly heritage. I bless the Lord who gives me counsel; in the night also my heart instructs me. I keep the Lord always before me; because he is at my right hand, I shall not be moved.

Therefore, my heart is glad and my soul rejoices; my body also rests secure. For you do not give me up to Sheol, nor let your holy one see decay. You show me the path of life. In your presence there is fullness of joy; in your right hand are pleasures forevermore.

May the Spirit of Jesus illuminate God’s word for us.

There are close to 30 four letter words in this psalm. Words like hand and glad and Lord and pour and so on. Maybe the word I’m thinking of can be found in this Psalm. Maybe not.

Loyalty:

The psalms are sometimes described as Israel’s hymn book. They are essentially a collection of song lyrics or poems from ancient Israel.   

Let me read you some other song lyrics from a different time and place in history…

Somewhere, somehow somebody must have kicked you around some. Tell me why you want to lay there, revel in your abandon. Honey, it don’t make no difference to me, baby, everybody’s had to fight to be free. You see you don’t have to live like a refugee (don’t have to live like a refugee)

Is there anyone in your bubble who knows who wrote the lyrics to this song?

That’s right, Tom Petty.  

A refugee is someone who has been forced to leave their country because of war, persecution or natural disaster. A refugee is someone who has lost their land, their home, their worldly possessions and anything else that would normally give a sense of security and stability.

People can also become emotional refugees. Perhaps they have had to flee their home because of an abusive relationship with a partner or a parent. Sometimes too children can feel like refugees when their parents separate, even if the separation is relatively amicable.

Essentially a refugee has lost their place of refuge, they have lost their security, and are looking for a safe haven.

I don’t think Tom Petty wrote this song for political refugees who have had to flee their own country. I imagine it was written more for emotional refugees, people who have suffered and been displaced when domestic relationships have gone bad.

That line where he says, ‘Tell me why you want to lay there, revel in your abandon’, is brilliant. It’s like he’s saying, ‘You may have a had a hard time but you’ve got a choice. You don’t have to think of yourself as a victim. You don’t have to give in to self-pity. Find refuge. Choose to re-connect. Start again. Be a survivor’

Perhaps Tom Petty never meant that much by his lyrics but they still speak.

In verses 1-2 of Psalm 16, David writes: Protect me, O God, for in you I take refuge. I say to the Lord, “You are my Lord; I have no good apart from you.”

David knew what it was to be a refugee. As a young man David was driven away from home and into the wilderness, because king Saul wanted to kill him. And then, as an older man, David became a refugee once more, when he was forced to flee from his son Absalom.

But despite being a refugee, despite being kicked around some, David does not revel in his abandon. He does not give in to self-pity. Rather he takes refuge in God Almighty. David makes God his home. (‘Home’ is a four letter word. Is that the word I’m thinking of?) When God is your home you can never be displaced. There is no greater security than the Lord.

That phrase, where David says, ‘I have no good apart from you’, is both a statement of David’s loyalty to God and at the same time a description of David’s reality.

As a refugee David has lost a great deal. He is living rough in the wilderness, he is separated from his family. He is having to survive by his wits. David knows full well that the Lord is his only hope.

In verses 3-4 David gives further evidence of his loyalty to the Lord God when he says: As for the holy ones in the land, they are the noble, in whom is all my delight. Those who choose another god multiply their sorrows; their drink offerings of blood I will not pour out or take their names upon my lips.

Most of the expert Bible commentators say the original Hebrew of these verses is quite difficult to untangle. But essentially, David is saying he is loyal to the God of Israel. He has put all his eggs in one basket. He doesn’t put a bob both ways. He doesn’t worship the Lord God alongside other pagan gods.

Like Jerry Maguire, who had only one client, David serves only one God, Yahweh.

This is quite remarkable really. If anyone had a reason to revel in his abandon or to go chasing after other gods, it was David. Despite all he has lost David does not blame God. As a refugee (as someone hungry for security) David presses into the Lord even more deeply.

How are you getting on with spelling the mystery word I’m thinking of? If you have chosen the letter L, then you are on the right track. Our word starts with L.

Fullness:

Churches around the country are empty this Sunday. We might feel quite sad for what we have lost because of Covid. 

But maybe there is another way of looking at it. We, in New Zealand, are in the fortunate position of having a choice. We could see the apparent emptiness of lockdown as an opportunity to make room for God.  

Sometimes the more stuff we have in our lives, the less room we have for God.

Sometimes the more capable we are, the more pressure we find ourselves under to meet everyone’s demands and the less time we have for God.

Sometimes the more freedom we have, the harder it is for us to make a good choice.

Sometimes the more entertainment we consume, the more difficult it is to be still and think.

Do you see where I’m going with this? Sometimes less is more. (‘Less’. That’s a four letter word that begins with L. Is that the word I’m thinking of?)

When I say, ‘less is more’, I mean, perhaps the emptiness has something to offer. It seems to me that David’s loyalty to God was formed in the womb of emptiness. He sought refuge in God because he had no other good thing.

Sometimes less is more.  Before we can fill our lungs with fresh air we must first empty our lungs of the stale air. I’m not saying I like lockdown. I look forward to a time when we can gather safely in level 1 or better still level none.

Maybe though, this time of lockdown is an opportunity to expel some stale air out of our lives. Maybe it is an opportunity to make room for the fresh oxygen of God’s Spirit.

A few years ago I asked my spiritual director to pray for me. I don’t remember the words he said exactly but I do remember his posture. He opened his hands, so they were empty, with the palms facing upward, like he was about to receive something.

He may not have meant too much by that gesture but it still speaks to me now. Before we can take God’s hand we must first let go of whatever else we are holding on to.

Here’s a quote for you for Fathers’ day (not sure where it comes from)…

A truly rich man is one whose children run into his arms when his hands are empty.

It may sound a bit sentimental, but that doesn’t make it any less true.

For someone who has lost so much, David still sees the cup of his life as full. Not full in a busy, hurried and pressured kind of way. But full in a pleasant, roomy, chilled out kind of way.

In verses 5 & 6 of Psalm 16 we read about the quality of David’s fullness…  

The Lord is my chosen portion and my cup; you hold my lot. The boundary lines have fallen for me in pleasant places; I have a goodly heritage.

In ancient Israel, during the time of Joshua, land in Canaan was allocated to tribes and clans and families according to sacred lot. The land allotted to your clan then stayed in the family and was passed down from generation to generation. This is what verse 6 is referring to when it says the boundary lines have fallen for me in pleasant places.

(‘Land’ is another four letter word beginning with L, by the way.)

The curious thing is that David was probably writing this as a refugee. David had been emptied of material possessions when he was driven off his land. He was living in a cave in the wilderness. How is it then that he can say: The boundary lines have fallen for me in pleasant places.

Well, David sees his loss and consequent emptiness as an opportunity for receiving the fullness of God himself. David may not have land but the Lord is his portion. David could not have a more ‘goodly heritage’ than the Lord. The Lord Himself is David’s inheritance. God Almighty is David’s land, the ground of his being.

In reading verse 6 I am reminded of Frank & Marjorie Duncan. Psalm 16:6 is their family motto. Frank was the minister of Tawa Baptist some years ago and before that he and Marjorie were missionaries in China during the 1940’s.

They served in Honan province during the famine of 1942 to 1944. Before the famine ended around 80,000 people, out of a population of 500,000 in that district, had died. In a material sense it was a time of great emptiness. But there was also a fullness of compassion in the relief camp that Marjorie and Frank ran.

Sometime later Frank & Marjorie became refugees as they were forced to flee China for their lives. How is it then, after coming through all of that, the Duncan family were able to say: The lines are fallen unto me in pleasant places; yea, I have a goodly heritage. (KJV)

Well, I cannot pretend to know what was in Frank & Marjorie’s heart, but I expect it had to do with verse 5: The Lord is my chosen portion and my cup; you hold my lot.

The kind of fullness that God gives is brought out more explicitly in verse 11:

…In your presence there is fullness of joy; in your right hand are pleasures forevermore.

The Hebrew word translated as fullness comes from the same root as ‘satisfied’.

The sort of fullness in view here is not the uncomfortable fullness one might feel after eating too much. Rather, it is the replete-ness of having eaten only what you need.

Nor is it the feeling of frustration, like when you’ve had a guts full of something. Rather, it is the feeling of joy and wonder that accompanies a new experience.   

As Derek Kidner observes, the joys and pleasures (of verse 11) are presented as wholly satisfying and endlessly varied, for they are found both in who God is and what he gives. ‘[David], the refugee of verse 1 finds himself an heir and his inheritance beyond all imagining and all exploring.’ [1]   

Time for another clue. If the letter ‘f’ is one of the letters you guessed, then well done; ‘f’ goes in the middle of our four letter word. We still need two more letters to spell the whole word though. 

Intimacy:

Verses 7 & 8 of Psalm 16 read…

I bless the Lord who gives me counsel; in the night also my heart instructs me.

I keep the Lord always before me; because he is at my right hand, I shall not be moved.

These verses speak of God’s nearness to David. David may be separated from his family and loved ones, but he is close to God. Close enough, in fact, to hear God’s counsel (his wisdom and advice) intimately.   

What does David mean when he says, my heart instructs me? Normally, in the Old Testament, the heart refers to a person’s mind; their thought life. However, the Hebrew word, translated as heart in verse 7, is more literally kidneys.

I suppose the English translators chose the word heart because the poetry of, my kidneys instruct me, would be lost on most modern readers. Probably David is using the Hebrew word kidneys as a metaphor for his conscience. Just as kidneys act as a filter for our blood, so too the conscience acts as a filter for our soul. So the thought is: in the night also my conscience instructs me.    

If that seems like overthinking it, then the reference to ‘kidneys’ might just be an ancient way of saying, ‘I have a gut feeling about this’, like an instinct or an intuition. You just know.

In any case, David’s intimacy with God is clear. God is guiding David in his inner being. And the interesting thing is that this intuitive / gut guidance happens at night, when David is quiet and still.

We read in the gospels how Jesus often went off by himself, very early in the morning, to pray. We are not told exactly what happened in these times of prayer but I expect it was a time of intimacy between Father and Son. A time when God spoke counsel to Jesus, in the stillness.

How is your devotional life at the moment? Are you able to carve out time to be still and listen to God? Stillness makes room for God.

I’m getting close to finishing the snowman. Better give you another clue. Did any of you guess the letter ‘i’? I imagine some of you did. The ‘i’ comes second. So far then we have ‘L-i-f ’. That narrows it down quite a bit. It is likely to be one of two words. Kids, if you are still listening, can you think what those two words might be?

Eternity:

Psalm 16 finishes on a note of joy at the prospect of unbroken fellowship with God. From verse 9 we read…

Therefore, my heart is glad and my soul rejoices; my body also rests secure. For you do not give me up to Sheol, nor let your holy one see decay. You show me the path of life. In your presence there is fullness of joy; in your right hand are pleasures forevermore.

In a nutshell these verses are alluding to eternal life. Eternal life doesn’t just mean existing forever. Eternal life describes a quality of relationship with God, characterised by joy and intimacy and pleasure.

Sheol, in ancient Hebrew thought, is the realm of the dead. The people of king David’s time didn’t really think of the after-life in terms of heaven and hell. Sheol wasn’t paradise, nor was it torture. It was more of a neutral space; a place of shadows.    

Notice how David talks about his heart, soul and body, in verse 9. This is a way of describing one’s whole self, physical and spiritual. David rests secure (he has no fear for the future) because he is confident that nothing, not even death, can separate him from the love of God.

The idea of eternal life, unbroken blissful fellowship with God, is not new to us because we have the gospel of Jesus. But it was a pretty progressive idea 3000 years ago when David wrote his psalm.

2000 years ago the apostles Peter & Paul both applied the closing verses of Psalm 16 to Jesus and his resurrection. In Acts 2, on the day of Pentecost, Peter made the comment…

Seeing what was to come, [David] spoke of the resurrection of the Messiah, that he was not abandoned to the realm of the dead, nor did his body see decay. God has raised this Jesus to life, and we are all witnesses of it.

It is through faith in Jesus that we also will share in resurrection to eternal life. Therefore, we do not need to be afraid in this life. If you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised Jesus from the dead, you will be saved.  

Conclusion:

It is time now for the great reveal. The word I was thinking of was life. Well done to all those who guessed it. You made it just in time before I put the arms on the snowman.

Psalm 16 shows us what true life is. We tend to think of life as mere physical existence. So if someone is still breathing we say they are alive. But in the thought world of the Bible, life is more than breathing. Life is close friendship with God. 

Some of you may have noticed how the four main points of today’s message make an acrostic of the word life: Loyalty, Intimacy, Fullness and Eternity, spells life.

Loyalty to God. Intimacy with God. Fullness of joy in God’s presence and eternity with God, beyond death. This is what Psalm 16 means by life.

Whatever situation you find yourself in today, may the life of the risen Christ be real for you. God bless.

Outtakes

It is no accident that the Israelite refugees in exile in Babylon said (in Lamentations 3:24), The Lord is my portion, therefore I will hope in him. The Jewish exiles had lost everything. But as painful as their amputation was, it made room for hope in God.
